Default Just when I was planning some upgrades/maintenance... n54 specialist help needed - 02-27-2017, 04:33 PM

So my car was slow starting... crank for 2-5 seconds before starting when cold. I just had my HPFP replaced (1300$ bill for me) about 6 weeks ago. I assumed it was related, so didnt hesitate to take it back before the planned; Charge Pipe, DCI upgrades and new Valve cover gasket were scheduled and done..

Today, the dealer called to tell me they had to test the EPDW's and if it's not that, it's the turbos. I advised them I replaced the EPDW's at their recommendation 6 months ago. They told me they would be inclined to 'start with new turbos' then. 4,722$ not including whatever gaskets, hoses, clamps, etc that they might need to finish the job. Mind you... my car was in for a slow start... nothing to do with performance... it just came up when they ran other tests.

1. I dont believe or trust this dealer, as I've had bad diagnosis from them in the past. They are the only dealer within 150 miles or so.

2. I find it hard to believe that my turbos have gone bad at 133k. It was babied by a little old lady before I purchased it... and honestly, I've had so many issues with it since I bought it... I havent had a chance to drive it very hard. On the paperwork they said 'Noticed abnormal loud clanking noise from the turbos indicating lots of play with the wastegate actuators) Funny enough when I just picked it up from them... was the first time I'd heard any rattle.

3. I installed a JB4 (got it used so no paperwork) but I'm not sure how to adjust anything more than the tune and resetting the check engine light when it comes on. (been coming on occasionally which led to the dealers first diagnosis of the EPDWs)

So here's my question/thought... I believe there's a setting in the JB4 that affects the wastegates right? Is this something I could adjust?

Also, instead of paying random large amounts to the dealer... is there anyone on the boards that is familiar enough with these cars that could check/address/fix my issues? I'd much rather give my hard earned money to a board member who I know understands the n54 and wouldnt let a cracked vacuum line lead them down the 'replace the turbos' path.

I really dont want to get rid of it... but man this BMW has been harder to deal with than the last 4 combined.

I am in WV, but I am willing to travel anywhere within NC/SC/PA/WV/OH/DC/MD... shoot, I'd almost travel anywhere to find a person who's comfortable with these engines. I believe my dealer has no idea and just figures whatever the issue is will be fixed when they replace everything....

Help... sleepless in Charleston...

I think I posted this to the wrong forum.. not sure if this should go in the support forum or the regional forum... Mods can you move it wherever it should be?

Menu 10 can be adjusted to mask waste gate rattle. There's a ton of info in the N54 JB4 sticky including all the JB4 menus. It's the top thread in the N54 forum.

Start with posting a screenshot of your user adjustment tab so we can see what we are working with.

I'm sure this is going to make me sound even more stupid than I have already.... but I dont know how to show you my user adjustment tab. Once installed, I stuck it on Tune 2 and havent touched it since, except to turn it off when headed to the dealer.

Invest in some good diagnostic software. Then you'll know what the problems are before the dealership does.

No matter how fast I go there's always someone slower in front of me.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him Jet Ski.
