THE TURBO IS FINE, BROKEN ROD and SPLIT PISTON
My stock turbo blew in 2014. My second one, Stage 2, now gone in 2018... What should be my next upgraded turbo?
Pure Turbos, what can you do for me?
Thoughts, suggestions, anyone?
2011 335i E92 AT, JB4, FMIC, DP, CP. Pure stg2 w/high flow intake & DV+. Fuel-It! E85 BEF Flash, stg2 LPFP & PI.

You ruined a stock turbo in 3 years and a ps2 in another 3 years? What are you doing to it? I don't see problems like that from anyone else.

Well it looks like your gonna need to blow up a S3 and complete the set.

Pressure ratio across stock frame is always going to be ****. Get a speedtech or bigboost. Then you’ll be blowing engines lol

Obviously this was my fault and was having way too much fun.
I was running a E85 flash.
The turbo failed right after the 3-4 shift shown in the log above.
Pure S2 since 06/2015
2011 335i E92 AT, JB4, FMIC, DP, CP. Pure stg2 w/high flow intake & DV+. Fuel-It! E85 BEF Flash, stg2 LPFP & PI.

Must have had 1:10 back pressure on that one. Probably had more exhaust gases in the cylinder than new air.

Were you running 93 on your E85 backend flash (or not enough E85)?
Were you trying to hit 33 PSI?

Part of the reason why I run a max of 20psi most of the time, with 25 only used by exception
If I was looking to run say 25 consistently and/or was looking for more power, then it would be more than just the turbo itself that would need upgrading

I think in both cases if you push something to 100% continually you're gonna hit trouble.

I’ve ran pure in two cars. If your goals are 500 whp it’s stout as hell. If you’re trying to run high boost targets and get on it a lot then your asking for a lot out of the turbo fold. When they break it all goes quite though lol. All in all I think it’s a very low statistical risk and a good product. I went to speedtech and now moving from jb4 to twisted mhd only. There are limits to each path.

The first turbo blew up on dyno at 23 psi at 5500ft elevation. PWM at like 70. And the second turbo whent at 22 psi. Just a loud pop. But Pure replaced both under warranty no issue.

Good to know its running well. If you have the opportunity, it would be great to see some logs with dyno numbers where you also have a baseline or pre GTX3576R set of numbers too.
At 25psi logs look fine for me too. What concerns me is the amount of work the PS2 needs to do to deliver at this level and the fact that the car just feels like it's right on the edge (lots of continual tweaking of things like the BEF just to keep everything looking good), hence my previous comments re 20psi. I'd also add the fact that gains start to diminish the closer I get to mid 20s which I feel indicates something else is at play - at 25psi, we should be well past the low 500s!
I think we all know what the current 'restricting' factor is and thankfully it appears to have been overcome through the S3 development
I think Jay, yourself, Stoolz and others on here pretty much nailed it in that if you're going to push the PS2 continuously to it's limit or maybe even low/mid 20PSI's then it may be worth exploring other options.
Not knocking the PS2 as I personally think it's a great piece of kit. I was probably one of the first E N55s to move to a PS2 and based on my own experience it has been super reliable with zero issues and meets my current requirements.
For anyone upgrading their turbo, the question is though what are your requirements?

hey man did you replace the rods after you bent one ? was there any damage to the engine ? i have a bent rod right now too..

I'm kinda sad to read this. Last year, I was very happy with the progress I made with the turbo, being able to safely (in my opinion) run 24psi. My plan was/is to leave it set at 22-24psi and daily drive it. I don't have as much experience with the turbo as the long time members, but I'll have to put more thought into what boost I want to daily at.
Hopefully Pure will chime in, I'd like to hear what their thoughts are on a reliable boost setting for the PS2 is.

I see a lot of talk about PS2 and people referencing I only made “XXX” whp with “xx” boost on my PS2. A turbo is only going to flow as much air as you allow it to, tons of you guys are running stock axle back or stock exhaust systems with just an open d 0 wn pipe. The stock ***** on these cars are only 2.5 inch inside diameter. it doesn’t take a genius to realize that is a major restriction for a car trying to pump out over 500 wheel horsepower. One of my friends jumped on the dynojet recently made 460whp on 18.5 psi with his ps2 dct 135i. He turned it up to 20 psi and made 480whp then turned it up to 21 and did 491whp. Stopped there as he is still on the stock flywheel. Point is his car is running a true 3.5” turbo back setup with an open Injen intake/pure inlet and is making a lot more power then most of you running 25+ psi through the stock exhaust. He did that on no more than 80% waste gate duty cycle IIRC. If you want good reliable power make sure your set up has every part of the puzzle it’s not just the turbo that’s going to make a lot of power you need supporting mods, running tons of boost through a choked up stock intake or exhaust is only going to create a ton of heat and back pressure making it harder on the turbo and shortening it’s life.
Check out this Supra that was running a 3” setup then switched to a 3.5” setup without touching the boost or tune. It came in making around 500whp and left making over 600whp just from stepping up a 1/2”.....

Late to the party here.
Wow! I can't see the log very well, but ignition timing looks terrible. Also your rail pressure is barely hanging on. We never suggest tuning an engine this way. You're just asking for damaged parts. If you want to keep a turbo bulletproof, any turbo, tune it to a max of ~85% WGDC. Same rule of thumb as port injectors. The resulting boost pressure at X WGDC is a product of the engine's capability to move air. You have a centrifugal compressor (turbo), working against a piston compressor (engine). So the boost pressure in the manifold is essentially the value of resistance of the engine's flow capacity. Email us if you haven't already, so we can get the turbo fixed up for you. Next time around, tune so that you have little to no timing drops. Full target rail pressure. And proper WGDC. You may even be quicker that way, if the engine is running target ign timing. Ign timing makes a big difference in power output.
