A splash of e85 for track days -
01-24-2018, 08:50 PM
I rock my 335i FBO at MSR Houston, a road course. With the mods installed and stock tune I was hitting 280+ oil temps during 20-30 minutes sessions. I have now discovered and love MHD 2+. I have recently installed a CSF radiator. For the next track day I will tune to the max cool setting and swap in my recently purchased BMS thermostat replacement.
Here is the question. Will pouring in a gallon of e85 add a small amount of protection for my engine temps. I am not looking to tune for more power or do an e85 specific tune. Even if a splash of e85 decreases the power to less than the heroic 2+ that is fine.
Will a bit of e85 cause a problem?

Hmm, ethanol will cool the charge temps some, but probably isn't going to significantly affect your coolant temps. For that you'd need to do more to the cooling system.
But a little Ethanol should be fine as long as you keep it < 20-30% (every car is a little different). And make sure you start low with the ethanol and log to ensure trims and HPFP are not dipping too low.

No sir e85 won't help. Ive made trips 2+ hour long trips on e85. When it's does nothing for oil Temps. My car Wil still see 250 oil Temps if the cars not moving or inching away at freeway traffic. Your best bet is the bms thermostat mod as it should keep you 30-40degrees cooler I believe, only downfall would be it taking a little longer to warm up.

Bms oil thermostat pin will not help. I have been there myself. Oil temps will still climb to 280 after hard 20 min session. E85 mix will not help also, maybe just a hair but not noticeble. Only thing left is to upgrade that oil cooler and put in a 180 thermostat. I have found that after even a hard 30 min session on 20psi on e50 the oil temps just stay under 240.

Thanks for the replies. At least I don't need to waste my attention on this while also tracking my car.
I do think upgraded oil cooler or coolers is in my future.
