What needs to be done for a Daily Driven N54 Single Turbo 850whp -
10-10-2017, 01:35 AM
I know nothing about engines ok nothing is exaggerating but I recently got into this car building scene cuz I have nothing better to do with my time as a 19 year old high school dropout who works online xd
OK SO, basically I got my pure stage 2 turbos yesterday and their going to get installed once my inlets and outlets n fuel pump get here but know I am already looking at precision turbos n how much power a single turbo makes and I'm guessing these engines that are making 700+whp aren't on stock internals, so I was thinking about buying one of these: https://www.motivmotorsport.com/prod...ilt-motor-n54/
because I plan on keeping my 335i for a while and even if anything happens I'm going to stick with the n54 motor so I am going to buy an engine on the side to build and have ready to go in when my n54 blows. My 2007 335i engine has 72k miles on it right now. If I wanted to build an engine from scratch, Id be paying someone and labour would be extensive, so I am just wondering what id need

from what i see most guys running single turbos are still running stock motors, building might give you a longer life cycle but you never know

easy. GTX55R on 91 octane and a jb4 should get you a reliable 900hp.

What is your experience with high powered cars?
Even if you manage to make 850whp with extreme octane and tuning, you won't be daily driving it at that power level. And if you did it probably wouldn't be an enjoyable experience.

That's what I was thinking as well. At that point its more race car or weekend fun runs than DD.

I don't think "Reliable" and "900hp" should be used in the same sentence for a N54 quite yet.

What is the intended fuel? Straight E85? 87 octane?

Some seriously deep pockets. Take that money and go buy a GTR. When I was a young adult I had a fully built 99 VR4 with straight turbo back 3inch exhaust 779WHP on the dyno. Every penny I had to keep the car running when I could. Cold starts forget about it. 3 alternators I think I went through, in line full pump huge ass turbos but man when it did start it would set off car alarms shake the neighbors windows it was a fun car when it ran but it was like everyone always says pick two .... Fast, reliable, cheap. If you have some money in your pocket and want some ridiculous fast turbo car my coworker is selling his one owner 1997 Turbo supra with 16k miles never modded all service records etc lol. GL

850 can be done on a stock block with single turbo. But you are on borrowed time. It could pop anytime. So if you plan on making that power you are looking at building your engine. Expect to pay around $15k minimum in parts.

There really isn't such a thing, yet, as a reliable daily driver 3 liter with 850 whp. This is a very tall order.

Reliable will be hard for sure but still no one said anything about the motiv build motor. Is it worth the 15k$ for all options? (its whole another question that transmission ain't gonna be happy at all at those power levels)... As well as mentioned with normal fuel it will be close to impossible to reach such power haha

Reliable is achievable on a built engine with a really good tune. As long as the block is built right, the tune will be the main difference between a blown engine or not. Worth the $15k comes down to is it worth it to you to make that kind of power. Transmission wise, your options are MT, propulsive dynamics, 4l80e, or a powerglide, the latter requiring more modifications to make them work. As far as fuel, full E85 should do the trick and would require a stage 4 lpfp, a double barrel shotgun and PI.

If you want 850 whp in a DD, that is even close to being semi-reliable, you need to forget about BMW's completely, anything with a 3.0L 6 cylinder, and start looking for something with a large V8 motor, can be twin turbo'd (or possibly large 2.4L+ SC), and beefed up transmission. Realistically, t's going to be a domestic car with an automatic, most likely.
That is really the only kind of platform that can do 800whp and be driven quasi-reliably, and probably not even then.
People always underestimate the gremlins that are introduced to an engine/car when you modify it so extensively.

$15K engine in a car worth $7K?? Plus several more thousand for transmission and other drivetrain components you break. Can't see how that will ever make sense for anyone, except a shop's race car.

It essentially requires modifying the entire drivetrain to the point that the car is not really easy or practical to drive every day anymore.

Well the facts are that motiv has built several motors- So has ABR and a few others...
Where are they now ?
They either fade away into the sunset quietly, or go out with a bang.
