Vargas N55 Turbo Upgrade Dyno - Take 2! -
12-11-2013, 03:47 PM
Hey guys,
Tony and I buried the hatched, we found the issues preventing the turbo from working as we had originally expected it would work, and I finally have some positive results to report.
I think the data speaks for itself but here are a few notes:
1) Boost with the fix is overall what I expected it would be from the start. It's able to hit ~20psi in the midrange and hold ~18psi @ 6000rpm. There is probably another psi or so of midrange boost in there with a 3.5 bar MAP sensor if we want it. It makes a little less down low which is to be expected. The gains up top are now well worth anything lost. On the street it's spooling faster now and feels great.
2) Tuning is done using JB4 ISO v5.2. We also reworked the back end flash for the E50 + meth fuel and found MBT around 9 degrees peak. The flash is loaded using a Cobb AP. Currently, they only support 2011-early 2012 models. Hopefully more models are added soon. The turbo can be used with the OEM flash but only with E85, or E85 + meth. We'll write pump gas maps for the turbo in the coming weeks for those who are using the back end flash and want to run 91 or 93.
3) With a little more boost and some other tuning tweaks 500whp might be possible with this setup. For now I'm very happy to have 120whp over stock @ 6000rpm. At 468rw this car should have enough power to run mid 11s full weight. I hope to find out this weekend.
4) This car finally lives up to it's "Dr N55" plates.

Thank you very much Terry. So to be clear, this can't be used without a backend flash on 93 octane?

Maybe at close to stock turbo boost levels. But that would defeat the purpose.

Terry.
Regarding the back end flash. Are you still planning to release a flash for the DCT (N55)? I really want this turbo :-P

Thanks.
I guess my main concern is road trips. For example, I'm driving from OH to CT this weekend. All along I80 in Pennsylvania has no E85. I would need some way to switch on the fly back to pump map compatibility, even if I am restricted to stock boost temporarily.

Oh, it runs fine on map 1 or 2 on pump gas. But those power levels won't be that much higher than the stock turbo on map 1 or 2...

Maybe 10s with seat removals!?
Also, does the new setup hold boost between shifts now?

So far it's great. This is a step so I didn't expect that to be an issue. We use the same no-flatline timing strategy we use with our N54 larger turbo tuning. This was a 3-4 on the low load dynojet.

Excellent progress with positive results. I have to be honest that it's still a little disappointing it didn't reach 500hp as that has been the expected result but nonetheless, still a win in terms of development and testing! Nicely done!

Awesome results. Glad to see the issue got fixed. Hopefully the N55 will hit 500whp here in the near future.

You will need the back end flash with the DCT for sure. This car is a step and also has the trans flash loaded.
It looks like it will make more than 20psi in the midrange if you want it. At the moment I'm going to cap it at 20psi. No idea how strong the block short is yet. Hopeful it's as strong as a factory N54 though. Which would mean 470whp is a walk in the park for it provided the tuning is solid.
