BENQ S6 MID JB4 data logger -
08-26-2012, 01:33 PM
I just picked up a BENQ S6 MID that had Linux on it for $20. You can normally find them for $40 - $75 on the web.
I loaded lite XP Pro on the SSD and overclocked it to 1 GHz. It has a 4.8" touchscreen.
The unit comes with a micro USB to Female USB adaptor. It also has WI-FI, Bluetooth and 3G GSM.
I have now used it to data log and to load new hex files on my JB4 in my 135i. It fits in the glove box and runs on 12v so I can use a direct connection to power it.
I also run my Slingplayer software on it and can watch my TIVO from home.

Make a shortcut in start menu to setfsb.exe
then click on properties and add these parameters target setfsb.exe -w5 -s133 -i03 -b1
the -w5 means wait 5 secs at startup*
the -s133 is the desired pci bus speed
the -i03 means to increase by 3mhz at a time till 133mhz bus is reachedand
the -b1 means to minamise
Make sure you run fsb first before you input these switches and select the ICS9UMS9610BL clock generator or this wont work. After that it will always load that pll.
The BENQs vary in price. My brother was getting $75 for the ones he sold. But he was also installing Windows XP.

I'm interested in how this works out for you. How are you loading Windows 8 on it? Dual booting it? How are you interfacing to the JB4?
I was planning on getting a windows 8 tablet specifically for this purpose but if it's possible to do with an android tablet in some way, even if it means dual booting Windows 8, I'm extremely interested.
Thanks!

You guys realize windows 8 on a nexus will be an ARM edition and not the full x86/x64 needed to run the JB interface..

This is what I thought but was hoping someone had come up with something better. Ah well. Not knocking the original post solution but the idea of having a android/windows hybrid tablet really interested me. Kinda like the Viewsonic ViewPad. Just wish the Viewpad clearly supported a newer version of Android. I think they list it as 2.2.

I don't log a lot but if I did I would definitely be a lot more interested in a smaller logging device so I don't have to tote around a full-size laptop.
Terry, is it likely the new Win8/RT devices (tablets etc) will actually be able to run current or recompiled versions of the JB GUI? That would be killer. MS likes to tout some high % of existing apps should run on Win8/ARM. I have my doubts but I'm no developer.
Thanks

Just got one for $60 off eBay.
This thing will also make a great Cobb datalog viewer and AP manager since you could load up a version of Office 07 Lite with Zasquatch Excel script on this thing.
So on a single unit tethering from your Smartphone or internet source, you can e-mail and get files, load them on the JB4 AND the Cobb AP via AP manager (for you stackers)
And I don't think there's anything stopping you from loading ATR on this thing either for that matter.
I do wonder if it can run INPA reliably. Then I would buy a car charger for this thing and leave in my car permanently.
I'll have to invest some time installing XP lite, Office lite and getting it all set up though. No biggie I think.
No more lugging around annoying netbooks! Yay.

Damn I need to find one on ebay too....
I even broke my last laptop trying to log..so im definately not gonna use my new laptop to log...
And if I can use the coding cable, JB4 logging/log viewing, COBB logging/map loading/log viewing this thing will also stay in my car and be an ALL in 1 N54 tuner tool lol

If anyone cares, been doing a lot of research into this device.
Found a guide for installing Windows on one that has linux pre-loaded on it:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpos...&postcount=213
And found internal shots of all the hardware. Looks like the SSD may not be upgradable, will continue looking into it.

This would be an awesome solution for me, as I don't have a laptop. However, I am not technically inclined at all, so I know I would not be able to get this running properly.
Great idea for those that know what they're doing with computers, though.

I read that it may not support SDHC. Think the limit would be 2 or 4gb if thats the case.
