Hi guys, hate to say it, but the problem is still there. Car still smokes like crazy on decel and initial acceleration. I purchased the car from him and am starting to wonder what I got in to! If any of you know Jake, he's ridiculously honest and from the little I know of him, a super genuine person: top notch. I'm brand new to the N54 and knowingly took a huge gamble, but I enjoy a good challenge. My background is primarily w/ Mitsu 3000gt VR4's, as well as jeeps, rat rods, etc. I have a lift and am in no huge rush to fix. This luckily isn't my DD (yet), and I'm not normally a forum poster, but looks like I'll need all the help I can get as Jake DEFINATELY knew what he was doing. I'm in the middle of a kitchen/whole house remodel with a baby expected in 3-4 weeks, so I might be sporadic, but I'll try to keep the updates rolling.
Not too sure where to start actually. Doing my due diligence. Current thoughts were to pull turbos and check for damage along w/ VSS inspection. Any suggestions? The oil is pouring out somewhere. Feel like it should be obvious.

Me too. So you bought the OPs car? It has newly rebuilt Hexons on it?

Yes, I bought OP's car, he gave me same story as on here and claimed it had the new Hexons on it, and I believe him.

Ah ok. So you're burning oil and don't think it's the turbos? Have you pulled the DP off to look at the turbine housings or inside of the DP for oil?

Has the car been compression and leak down tested? Any misfires?

Car runs pretty good. PO said that it was making valvetrain noise, however, I'm not accustomed to the noises of this car so I cannot comment. I'll try to take video.
I literally bought car last night and have not had a chance to do anything. Not sure I will tonight either, but will try.
Symptoms:
-Valvetrain noise (subjective)
-heavy smoke on decel, @ idle, (could be partially water vapor, but def. smells like oil) and right after decel
-no misfires, no CEL currently
-Having never driven the car before, don't know how it should feel, however, it pulls hard and drives nice as far as I'm concerned. Drove it home ≈40-45 miles last night, and other than subjective noise and smoke, no issues. Didn't get on it hard at all and prob won't until I at least suspect what the issue is.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys can offer.

I saw it on Craigslist and you got it for a steal. Not the cleanest car in the world, but at $4500... I think you made out pretty well with all the mods.
I would definitely make sure the motor is in good condition before doing anything else. If the new turbos are installed, I would guess you've got a problem with one of the cylinders.

I'll definitely be pulling the plugs and doing a compression and leak down test to determine engine health. Will share results.

Are you guys Pre tensioning your wastegate before install and priming the system? I was one of the first to get a hexon kit in Chicago, and I'm at 94k miles, 10k on the turbos and knock on wood no smoking issues at all. Fbo with aftermarket exhaust, just get condensation on cold mornings, warmer days I just smell e85😎. Also I beleive oil has a major roll in how everything is lubricated. I also switched to a 5w40 shell diesal oil and feel like since ours cars run so damn hot, it needs a oil that's meant for hot applications

Update: Couldn't resist, checked turbos, look brand new w/ no issues. With all OP did to diagnose and amount of smoke and noise, along w/ his background, I'm going to pull engine and replace. Will be a while before I make any serious progress, but will try to post.

Please compression and leak down before you pull it. For the sake of the forum I'm interested to see the results.

This. The PCV systems in these cars can be finicky. Don't pull it without verifying that it's bad first.

Compression test was done a few weeks ago. 170psi across the board.
Look at my first post.
As i Discussed with the buyer. I'm sick of dealing with the car. I did my work. Spent ~$4k on it in the last month. It was time to move on. I sold it at a fair price and picked up a G37X for the wife to drive. I just can't be working on this car every weekend when its a DD.

Compression can be good and it still have problems, thus the need for a leak down. If leakdown is good also, no need to pull the engine. It's a problem elsewhere.

If compression is good there is no need for a leakdown test as a leak down test is a diagnostic procedure following abnormal compression readings.
In fact the variance of compression in the n54 is 2 bar/29psi which is quite high considering most engines is 10-15psi.
A leak down tests helps pin point WHERE the compression is bleeding off. IE: Rings, valves, or cracks in coolant/oil passages.
EVERY engine has leakdown. 10% IMO is acceptable because it bleeds past the rings.
Here's a link to educate yourself a bit more.
