Just a shot in the dark, but I've read about similar relative-noise-related events.
yeah i have aftermarket ***. same mods as I had before switching over to ISO.

I doubt it's engine noise covering it. I would have at least heard it in tunnels or under bridges.

While I understand it is technically my fault for having "bad" wastegates, it is disappointing to go from zero noise to sounding like a jalopy at part throttle when i drive past barriers or in enclosed areas.

Anyone have 1M??? Are the command for the exhaust flap and the DTC push at startup working for you??? Everything else works for me, except for these two!!!

I agree. It almost ruins the ride just thinking about the noise even when I cannot hear it.

This is a real screwed-the-pooch moment for BMW. But I think they know it.

Last year I went to ALMS in WI and got to meet the BMW team b/c I am a bmwcca member. There was some marketing guy there (nice guy) taking questions -- and complaining that ALMS had restricted the M3's power with a restricter plate. BMW won that race, BTW.

So -- trying to be clever and see if the FXX M3 (barely even discussed at the time) was going to have turbos -- I asked if BMW had asked how ALMS would handle turbos, which seem like they would make restricter plates less useful.

He got my point and basically ignored my question and said: Oh the new M3. I've seen it getting oil changes and stuff, but the engine type has not been announced. Anyway, our new car may get this engine (pointing at the M3) -- which turned out to be true since 'the new car' is a Z4 with the M3 V8.

So I pushed more and said " but you guys are going almost entirely to turbos now. I think that's good."

Response: Yeah, the turbos are good, but we do have a noise problem and everyone hates it.

It was about that time the extended warranty was announced.

This year, I will have better questions for him!

Does this stuff happen with the N63 or other BMW motors?

my turbos rattle like crazy. I am trying to decide if I want to go back to stock and have BMW replace them under warranty... or just go ahead and grab some RBs. I know I will get RBs eventually so it might be a waste of my time to put my car all back to stock and get new stockers.

It is all a question of finances. Going RB gives you much more power and upgraded WG's. The car will come alive like going from no JB4 to JB4 to map 1 for the first time. RB's make that noticeable of a difference. Its all about the $$$$$.

If you're on the decision bubble, factors to consider are that there is a non-zero risk that the dealer says 'your fault' and that the extended warranty is not the same as the new maintenance type agreement.

BMW has been known to say it was another problem and charge you to fix the other problem or charge just for the diagnosis which isn't cheap. I saw one account of someone paying 2k dollars to be told the problem wasn't mechanical.

For me, they said at 40k that it was a vacuum problem, which they fixed for free cuz it was still <50k on the car. Also, the rattle was reduced but not gone.

If I was already intending to use RB's in the near future and had to do a ton of work just to get the dealer to play ball, I would probably just go the RB route.

As they say around here JM $0.02

RBs aren't that bad. You can get the turbos and all stuff to install them for under 3500 after core (assuming you reuse the oil and coolant lines). Add the bms back end flash from a cobb and your around 4000 (with used cobb flasher).

I have done 4 turbo swaps on VW/Audis. I will tackle the install myself.

That's why I went iso. Seems like the only way to go. I love my G5 iso.

That's impressive.

Someday I will sell my condo and buy a house with a garage ...

Not sure I'd jump on a turbo refit first thing. But it does sound fun.

I was an issue where just after changing gears and just at the momment when my foot was about to come up off the clutch i would get a huge miss. I mean it was like all cylinders stopped firing and the car fell on its face. Then all of a sudden it would roar back to life above where it let off. It was a very annoying experience so i just re sodered the diodes back together and have been loving life since. Btw, im still conviwnced that for us m6 guys there is a clutch activated can flap feature that i think was related to my issue. Even stock i can hear the flap close just after i let up off the clutch at any rpm after a gear change only. Yet i hear nothing if i remain in the same gear and bog it down to the equiv rpm...
Update... spoke with Terry and he said he thought he had ISO ironed out better since I first tried it back on firmware v.10x. So I decided to give it another shot. All I can say is Wholly Phit! The top end feels like I'm on a Honda CBR! Check out this log in 3rd & 4th gear running 50% E85 in Map 5...

I am running 15c as apposed to 16 or 16b, in my opinion with my car 15c seems to be more responsive. The 16 hex's are smoother but i like the feel of 15c. I made some adjustments including to auto shift reduction, lowering it to 50 and the feel is terrific. Great work Terry.

Just upgraded to G5 ISO yesterday, 16 firmware, Map 5, 50/50 E85. Nice piece of work Terry, very smooth. Doesnt feel quite as brutal as Map 5 on the G4 but part throttle much better, no more surging. Other than playing with tip in agressiveness using lagfix are there any other settings I should consider playing with?

Did you try 16B with high lagfix? I got mine at 80 and its sweet. 15C was interesting, but burned a lot of fuel for me. I prefer the drive characteristic of 16B too. To get the response out of 15C that I wanted required settings that made the gas pedal require only like 10% input to be accelerating still at 130mph lol.

I recently upgraded wifey's E61 wagon to G5 ISO with 16B. I had issues with losing boost at high speed with the G4. Figured the isolated fuel mgmt should help.
Power is smooth and linear, and I swear to god the car even feels better while warming up and waiting for the tune to kick in.
After i get some better rims and tires on it I plan to add an FMIC to improve throttle response and get a bit more power going. It's a heavy car, so it needs the help.
G5 ISO is the way to go for sure.
