Default Sudden hiccups/studdering - 06-12-2018, 03:52 PM

E90 N55 70k miles

I have MHD installed but no map or custom tune flashed. Driving down the road at constant speed and it just started hiccuping or missing every 10 seconds or so. It does it immediately if you put a load on it.

I did just fill up with 93 octane about 10min prior so i thought maybe bad gas but I do have an ethanol sensor and it says E11. I would assume if there was a bunch of water in the gas that it would read higher.

The plugs are maybe 1k miles old. I could probably open the gap up a little since I'm not running a tune or ethanol at the moment but it wasn't a problem previously so I don't think that's the cause.

My last guess was maybe it's time for coils? I wouldn't be surprised if they were original. I have the service records from ~35kmiles up to now and they don't appear to have ever been changed. Same with the HPFP.

I took a quick log around the neighborhood hoping someone smarter than me would see something that stands out and maybe point me in a direction to start. Thanks guys.

I kind of figured that. I pulled the JB4 off last fall and it's just been sitting on the shelf.

Took the car out last night and everything seemed fine. I'll probably find out where to get a set of coils and order them now just to have on hand.

Why not leave it in and just put it in flash mode? It's a useful tool IMO!

I got tired of how much it affected driveability. It was great at full throttle but at part throttle, around town, and shifting gears stuff it was real annoying. I got tired of fighting it.

I figured if I'm not using it and I can log with MHD, why leave it on the car? I don't know what else it does that would have been useful? I'm not running port injection or anything.

It acted like that in flash only mode? that's odd!

No, I never tried flash only mode. But like I said, if I'm running flash only and not really using the JB4, why leave it on the car? What would be useful?

More if you ever wanted to switch back to using it.

Flash only mode would allow you the flexibility to run flash only, but if you ever wanted to re-introduce the JB4- itd be as simple as turning it back on versus physically re-installing.

Wed be happy to try & help smooth out your issues if/when you ever decide to throw it back on there
