Default LSD - 05-03-2018, 01:38 PM

Looking into getting an LSD for my 335, can't deal with traction control taking over every time I step on it. After doing some research I see Wavetrac, Mfactory, Quaife LSD's are the most popular. Leaning towards MFactory at this point but would like some input.

Also I have a 2013 335is manual. The final drive for this is 3.08 correct? Should probably stick with this ratio for a daily driven car?

Mfactory for sure, stick with that 3.08 final drive.

Considered MFactory and Quaife. Went with MFactory Pro.

Been running it for over a year and really happy.

If you're getting it for improved straight line traction, it will help but don't expect miracles

Not sure? The pro does have a different bias ratio and replaces a number of internals that some others leave as stock if that makes a difference?

Thanks for the input guys. Going to go with MFactory. Looking for a direct swap out and return my old diff to the company. Was looking at ECS, seems to be the only place that offers this.

That should be the correct one right? If anyone knows a better place that I can get for cheaper please let me know.

Even with a LSD I expect you'll get spinning wheels and traction control kicking in, just more controlled gradual slides rather than such abrupt intervention and snapping back between no traction and traction.

Someone with a diff installed can confirm.

I have a MFactory helical LSD sitting in my garage now, hope to have installed by end of the week.

Considering price, reliability, and lifetime warranty of their helical, MFactory is hard to beat - there are plenty of other options, but they're more expensive or clutched, or less-suited to DD.

My concern with going MFactory would be that you are still on stock drive shaft and axles. I don't know the details but it sounds like the connection between the drive shaft and diff is a weak point. Especially if doing hard launches.

I don't think I can easily go M3 diff with the 2.56 ratio on the DCT diff I have.

Why do you think MFactory is different in this regard? No diff is going to magically prevent stock shaft or axles from breaking.

A sticky tire will go further than the LSD. Just fyi, my Nitto NT05s improved traction greatly, more so than my friends LSD for him.

If you're actually trying to go around corners and accelerate out of corners, the LSD makes a big difference. Just the behavior of the car in general is much better and a lot more fun. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

That's where my driveshaft broke, but don't think it was anything to do with which diff I have. Also, I'm N55 so not sure if there's differences?

Interestingly, i believe there was a recall on builds up to 04/11 for something like this as it was recognised as a weak point.

Mine is a 07/11 build though?

Might try and dig up the specifics of the recall to see if it is the same thing.

There is always the option of going with the M3 diff where you use the M3 drive shaft and axles which are bigger than the 335s. The M3 diffs are quite cheap but the ratio is not right for DCT cars. Good swap for Autos and Manuals.
It's something to consider.

I also agree that a sticky tyre can be a better option for many people. If for example traction at the drag strip is your goal.

This is what I'm hoping for here. I know it's not going to be the answer to my traction problems completely. I also drive the car in the winter in the snow so hopefully the LSD will help here as well.

Usually have mine garaged for the winter but, on the day in Jan when it needed it's annual MOT we had snow.

Still wasn't great, but it is a BMW! It was however fun bar the part where I got stuck!

I have a os gilken lsd with a 3.46fd. On regular 265 tires I spun 2nd but now I drive on 275.40.17 nt05r. great traction once they are warm. ive broken 2 stock axles and one mfactory axle all launching. Lsd is great but its not necessarily designed for significantly improving traction.

I might be wrong but I believe a torsen style diff doesn't work if one wheel is on ice. Should make drifting far more fun though.

Ok it's the helical diff that doesn't work on ice.

Isn't helical the type and Torsen a brand name? I think it's the same style. Regardless, I wouldn't worry about this ice situation in the real world.

I think it is yes.
All I want to highlight is that a diff like that might not be much help in icy conditions. If a wheel is on ice it gets all the power like an open diff. The traction control will lock the wheel for you and bias the torque where you need it.
