Default Trim Levels when accelerating - 09-07-2021, 08:46 AM

I've noticed that my trim 2 levels match the trim 1 levels, except half way through a pull. I've attached a log where you can see 2 examples where they start to diverge.

Is there anything I should be checking or is this within tolerance? I've checked the wires and they seem well connected (I bought the Fuel Wire Adapters to not damage the one on the car).

I use a Custom Map, but this happens with MAP 2 as well.

Logs attached...

Take a proper log at WOT and don't edit the file before uploading it.

AFR's are fine but divergence could be a variety of things...injector, intake leak, etc. It's doesn't appear too excessive but do a good log.

For proper review and the JB4 to adapt, please do logs in 3rd or 4th gear from 2K rpms to redline at wide open throttle.

Will do. It was a long log, so I cut everything out except the part I wanted you to review.

Thanks

Here's a new log, to 6K RPMS. Please let me know if this works. I can see the divergence in Trims halfway through the pull. But to your point, AFRs are similar.

That wasn't a good log...you never went WOT but the same result and same answer as above.

Unfortunately, I don't get too much of a chance to hit WOT around here. Either way, I got another chance today, BUT, messed up on the gears which messed me up. I did finally hit WOT in 3rd, but from 4K to 6K. Not sure if having only that part will be of value. Otherwise, I'll try again next week.

That being said, in the logs, when in WOT, there was a difference of about 15 between the trims..

Out of curiosity, disable fuel control and see if that has any impact.

Will do. Is it sufficient to do so via the bit0? Or disconnect of those wires?

Seems like it has to be a loose or mixed up fuel control wire to me as Steve suspects.

I'll recheck the wiring. I had purchased the adapters, so maybe I didn't place the positap correctly. One of the wires is longer than the other. I placed that one on the driver's side, which I think is correct.

If I had the wires in the right position, which side would be Trim2?

Thanks

Here's a log of a pull with Fuel wires off.

I don't see the divergence there, so you may be right. Something may be wrong with the wires.

So I took things apart and I think I made some discoveries. There was no continuity between the fuel adapter and the pins on the JB4 for the driver's side connector. I thought it was the positap, but it wasn't established until I pushed in the red wire into the adapter a bit more. So maybe the adapter I got was loose with it's wire connections.

On the passenger side, it seems to be fine. So I'll take it for a test drive.

Just one question: on the passenger side, there's a resistor, right? I recall reading that somewhere on this forum. I don't get the beep from the multi-meter, but there was definitely evidence that there was connection.

[EDIT] NVM on the resistor question. I read up on the short side wire and answered my own question..

I think that was it! Please look at my latest log, with Fuel Wire enabled. It's long, but towards the end I did a Pull from 3.5K to 5.5K in WOT. No more divergence!

Just a question of curiosity, do you think this trim variance could be the cause of MAP 3 pushing my car into Limp mode?

I used to run that Map, and it behaved really good, but after a while, the car would enter Limp mode. Only got a code the first time it happened, but after that, would not get a code when entering LM.

That's why I run MAP 6 with boost in between Map 2 and 3.

With it fixed, I am tempted to test Map 3 again..

That looks MUCH better! Yes, so I'd try map 3 again and post a log.

Here's a Map 3 log(actual pull near the end). Trims still looked good. Does the timing look ok? I think it does, minimal pull back. All this on Costco Premium gas (93).

Car felt great!

Just as an update, since fixing the Fuel Wires, I have been running Map 3 exclusively. I am yet to hit Limp Mode. So, that was definitely the issue.

The car runs good. I just discovered that 2 recently new gas stations around my city have E85. Going to start experimenting with E30 and perhaps Map 4.

Looks good but you start getting some timing correction toward the end of the pull. My guess is that is you continue on to 4th gear and hold it, you may see more timing corrections. Keep an eye on those trims if you start adding more ethanol.

So I put 6 gallons of E85. I don't have the meter, so let's say I have more than E10 in my car :-P

Here's a pull where I Shifted from 3rd to 4th in Map 3. Less timing corrections than my previous map.

At the very, very end I tried to do one on Map 4, but didn't get a good shot at it. Overall, the small amount I captured in that one kind of tells me perhaps I should stay on Map 3.
