Default Automatic Tranny Slip - 03-06-2018, 01:30 AM

Hey guys! I have been doing a little bit of research on my issue, and It's difficult to precisely pin point the solution. So I hear I am and I hope you can help! Basically, I was driving car in 6th gear (mods below), and I gassed it the car builds up to 18 psi probably close to 500 crank torque. I noticed a weird slipping sensation where the engine was reving higher than the car was accelerating. I let off the gas and tried it again, and the car TCU went to limp mode. Issue went upon restart. I have been googling the O-rings that commonly go bad, and that looks like a relatively low cost job. Any thoughts if that might be the issue, or what a common cause of this could be? Car has 110K miles, and recently had a transmission drain and fill. I am concerned about trying to repeat results out of fear it could damage the clutches. If it's a solenoid problem, it might be cheaper to just wait for the tranny to die, and then buy a used one with sub 50k miles. Thanks for your help!

Does the trans shift normal otherwise?

It does, without issue.

I would try dropping the valve body and doing a vacuum test. Install a zip kit and install xHP flash. Does not sound like a solenoid issue.

Appreciate the info! I google'd the zip kit, and I don't really feel that would resolve the issue. From what it sounds like, It's either a worn clutch pack which is unlikely, or maybe one of the seals is leaking fluid pressure. It's just interesting that I only saw slipping in 6th gear. I should test it out more to see if I can duplicate the problem.

Good to know. It would potentially be 400 dollars in parts and fluid if I do the mechtronics unit overhaul. Or if I just wait and see what happens, I can get a junkyard tranny for 800, and spend another 400 installing it, or do it myself. I'm not so sure the cost for maybe fixing the issue would warrant me to actually do it. If I truly knew this would resolve the problem, I might consider it. But it might just make sense to wait and see what happens. Thanks for the input!

You could just go ahead and buy the new trans and install the zip kit, mech unit, etc on the "new" trans - and then wait for your stocker to slip/destruct. When that happens, you'll have the "new"-used upgraded trans ready to go.

Yea, that sounds like a better option. Question though. Does the clutch/torque converter lock up harder with higher rpm? The issue happened when I was gassing it in 6th around 2,000 RPM.

it's either locked or not, past a certain rpm.

I still say valve body issue. doubtful you burnt out the clutches for 6th gear.

Yea, very likely is. If it isnt a clutch or a torque converter, there's limited things left that would cause the issue. I recently did a drain and fill on the tranny, wish the problem displayed itself sooner... boo
