Default CEL code help - 05-20-2019, 08:53 AM

Hi I have a 2015 435i xdrive with auto trans. I randomly got a cel with warning to drive moderately. I slow drove to autozone to get the code read. I parked the car and went to get the autozone associate. When we get back to the car the code is gone and his scanner cannot find anything.

I assume bad spark plugs as the car has 60k and the original plugs. I replace the plugs with NGK 97506 gapped to .022. CEL does not reappear for some time. In the interim I install a JB4, charge pipe, and fmic. Run map 1 for a few days without incident and the cel comes back with the drive moderately warning. I use the jb4 to read the codes and I get :

13e201 suspected Vanos fault
204081 suspected Vanos fault
080011 no description found

The cel sometimes disappears after driving a few miles. Sometimes it stays on. Sometimes it does not show up at all and the idrive says all systems ok.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be and/or how I can troubleshoot or repair?

Thanks!

So I see a open port on the top of my engine. It looks like a vacuum line or something is meant to go there.

See attached picture. This is not my engine, obviously. Its the only one I ould find showing the port that met the file size limit. I have circled the port in yellow. My motor has this port uncapped as well.

Could this be the cause of my issues?

So, I have found some info that seems to conclude that this vacuum line port is no longer used on the N55. It was utilized on earlier generation motors. Does that sound accurate?

Does anyone know what is usually cause of these codes or how I might troubleshoot/repair?

Could it be JB4 related? The cel does happen much more frequently now that the JB4 is installed.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that I also installed a BMS intake at the same time as the other performance parts. Could there be any correlation there? I have heard about oil filter intakes causing MAF issues with symptoms similar to mine.

Due to the drive train malfunction coming on much more frequently since I installed the aftermarket parts, I have to believe there is a relationship there. Either to the parts themselves or to to installation, rather than a spun hub. It would be a huge coincidence that I would spin my hub in the same day and hour as I put these parts on, right? I mean its not like I added 150hp and drove hard for 12 hours.

Any thoughts?

When I start the car cold from sitting over night and start driving down the road, I will get the engine malfunction within about a mile. It says full engine output is not available. The car feels slower, but other then that it feels normal. No shuddering or noises or anything.

If I immediately stop the car and restart it the malfunction will be gone, but will return within a mile of driving. However, if I drive a few minutes after the alert first shows up. Allowing the engine to come up to full temp, and I stop and restart the car. The alert will not return, and will not reappear so long as the engine is hot.

So I just got an obd scan tool and was able to capture the code thrown during the drivetrain malfunction. It reads differently then the JB4, is that normal? The code it gets is p1338.
