Default 1st gear useless? Use 2nd gear from a launch up to a 40 roll?? - 04-19-2013, 08:34 AM

1st gear useless? Use 2nd gear from a launch up to a 40 roll??

It seems all guys are launching in second and also doing rolls up to 40 mph in second for best results. Any reason to ever use first in a race??

DONT launch in 2nd gear if you have a manual. It will be hell for the clutch and i have already seen at least 1 thread where someone was doing it non-regularly and his clutch is completely toast at like 60k miles.

If I can get 60K out of my clutch I'd be pretty happy.

I know there's a lot of info on launching in 2nd with the 6spd auto. What about the 8spd uato in the F30?

EDIT: I have an F30 now even though my "Car" still shows my E92 but I don't have a "Your Profile" tab in my user CP for some reason co can't change it. ???

I too have been struggling with the profile edit for some time. Worked out the URL format and guessed it to be this once you are in the usercp:

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/profil...do=editprofile

Works for me ... Yay

Just so weird to me, when I had my z06 I talked to all kinds of guys that raced with crazy amounts of power and never heard of anyone racing out of second gear

Probably because they were not boosted engines. No naturally aspired engines....except diesels.... make max torque below 3k rpm.

im not a fan of the 2nd gear launch because of not knowing which clutch pak in the auto is being used. i too use to race my 2000 vet auto and never crossed my mine to use 2nd gear. i also had drag radials on it cutting a 1.6x 60ft time...to me just sheer torque multiplication dictates using 1st gear, but with the 335 one wheel to carry the load, 2nd gear would def. work...again i dont know bmws trans inner workings but in my vet it would truly shorten the life of it

i s this because of the torque of the 335 u are refering to? i failed to mention i also had 150 shot and 3500 stall converter, which im sure far exceeds the 335 hp and torque.

I still do 1st gear launches 6AT and I pull down high 11sec runs or 12.0 somethings consistently. For some reason my 2nd gear launch bogs or spools slowly and I can never achieve better than a 2.0 or worse 60.

1st gear launch I can get 1.8 or low 1.9s regularly, every now and then I pull off a 1.7.

Not sure what is up with 2nd gear launch for me though.

Any thoughts for 2nd gear bog or slow spool?

I always read that 2nd is best and thats what I use at the track but 1st seems
to take off harder but on any roll race it makes no difference so I dont know.

when I was stock I was geting better 60ft times no I cant get under a 2.0 and I hit a 187 60ft
stock I ran last night and got a 2.0 60ft and ran a 12.8@ 110 in very humid 90+ s fla temps mods are jb4g5iso and dci with 30% e85

I know what they say and believe me I have tried but 1st gear is what gets me in the 11's, 2nd gear bogs i may have a slight boost leak just cant seem to find it. My best time is 11.87 @ 119.3 I am looking for where I saved that slip.

I got 107K out of my stock clutch, tuned for 104K and FBO for at least 70K miles. I also drive the car like I stole it on a daily basis as well as autocrosses, road racing, and drag strip runs, are all a weekend routine .

On street tires, I like the second gear launch. If I was on DR or Slicks, I'd probably use first.

11.76@124 (123.9) fbo + e60 mix + street tires + stock exhaust. no meth.

LOL 108K on the stock clutch here. I just finished installing the Spec 2+ yesterday over the weekend. I am loving it!
