Default Anyone tried cleaning your injectors? - 10-30-2018, 09:24 AM

Maybe this has been mentioned before but before you drop some serious cash on new injectors, try pulling them and cleaning the tips with some carburetor cleaner or other fuel cleaning products.

I kept getting a misfire on Cyl 1 along with the error code 29E1. This with new 750cc PI and brand new plugs. I decided to pull the Bosh OEM injectors to see what they look like (and swap them to see if the misfire followed).

Sure enough, Cyl1's injector was covered in carbon buildup (~78k miles on them). I grabbed a can of carb-cleaner I had in my garage and spent 5-10 mins spraying it with the cleaner then rubbing the cleaner into the nozzle tip with a clean terrycloth.

The tip went from black to a more metallic gray color and I could actually see the two nozzles again. Put the injectors back in, coded the proper injectors for their new homes and went out for a run. I haven't seen any error codes since.

Just might be worth trying if you are looking into new injectors, would save you a TON of money!!!

I may do the same over the winter, though mine have much higher mileage.

Keep us posted! Post pics if you have any

I've cleaned injectors a similar way and have had great results.
Brake cleaner and Scotch Brite (purple stuff) shines the tips up nice.
First time I was a bit nervous with the abrasive pad but misfires went away and never had any injector issues of any kind after that.

I've done it a couple more times again since then. Carbon used to build up quick when I was just on 93oct. Now I burn E60 and notice much less buildup.

Thanks.
What prompted the subsequent cleaning if no symptoms?
How long after prior cleaning?
How long ago was the first cleaning?

Does the injector rubber seal need to be replaced when doing this?

First time cleaning was at 72K miles about a year ago. Car now has 88K.
I've had the valve cover off a few times for gasket replacement and again for lifter replacement. Injectors come out to give enough clearance to remove valve cover. While they're out I usually clean them.

Also the Teflon sealing ring and decouple rings are only good to reuse maybe once. So as part of the removal process I replace those as well. In addition to that I use a 3/8" round plastic brush and a few drops of WD40 to clean the injector bore followed by a little compressed air.
