Default Timing chain tensioner servicing - 02-09-2017, 09:35 PM

Hey guys,

Ive searched for as long as i can stand so i decided to post.

Ive found a list of general servicing for the n54 and no one mentions the timing chain tensioner. Should this be replaced every however many miles? I know this is an interference motor so i dont want it to just go bad one day.

Also, in the general servicing list i found, it said serpentine belt and V belt. I have no idea what a V belt is. Can anyone shed light on either of these topics?

thanks in advance

General rule of thumb is to replace only if it's making noise (failing). How many miles on your engine? Mileage isn't necessarily a good indicator of wear though, since miles can be heavy or light duty. For example, I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 with 183k and the tensioner was still well within spec, yet I beat on it quite a bit just trying to get out of peoples' way with that massive 104hp. I haven't heard of timing chain tensioners being a high wear item on N54s either.
