N54 Exhaust Pro's...need some advice on the E60 -
03-04-2016, 02:18 PM
Ok guys ..
The question I have is on the 2008-2010 E60 535i, the exhaust muffler itself is a huge two piece system. The left piece of the system that has the flap that you can control, is actually a resonator, not a muffler...from what I have researched...
So...I had a muffler delete a few days ago the drones like a mo fo. That sucks and is irritating...so back with the stock setup I went..
Do you think that I could remove the muffler(right side of the 2 priece system)...run a straight pipe out the back with tips and leave the left priece of the 2 part system (resonator) with a turn down
Will that kill the drone with the E60
I think with replacing the muffler with a magnaflow or whatever, drone will still be an issue
I have ******* dp's already and I am thinking of removeing the secondary cats as an option as well
I tried to upload a pic..but it was a no go...I'm gonna try again later

I guess nobody has messed with the stock mufflers on the 535I and cut it up... Just hacking it off causes all kinds of drone and to me it doesn't sound that great..
I will probably just delete the secondary cats then

I would be interesting in seeing how it would be with the resonator removed and the valve still in place but leave the muffler alone. I would think it would be pretty much the same at idle and low RPM and it would just open up and flow better at higher RPM.

So your saying remove the left section" resonator" and leave the right section" muffler" still installed....I would think that would cause more drone...Maybe not though

That's what I was thinking but I don't know how the valve is controlled. If it only opens under boost that might not be so bad. If it opens up at 25% throttle while cruising then it probably will drone. I guess in that case maybe a smaller, lighter, less restrictive resonator could be installed in place of the stock one.
So.... I removed the secondary cats and I gotta be honest guys...Not what I expected.. The exhaust note increased very slightly and the exhaust smell did get a bit stronger... Not too worried about the smell but I did what a little more exhaust note...
Maybe it is an issue with the 535I stock muffler..which is still on the car...
But i do what a little more of an aggressive sound...not so stock..Any ideas?
Remove the stochkhuge muffler and add a borla or magnaflow?

I would suggest opening up the stock muffler and see what's inside. Looks like it has a pneumatic valve that opens up for higher flow as well. If you don't want drone, my suggestion is do the equivalent of "golf-tee" mod and this (http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...6&postcount=13) on your car.

Thanks for the reply Cloud9Blue...I do have my valve set to open at all time and I did think about opening up my stock muffler...I was hoping that a fellow 5er could chime in and share their experience...
I might have to give it a shot

I haven't starting modifying mine yet so I'll be following this closely. First comes *****-less d-p's. I was going to delete secondarys after that but it sounds like it didn't do much for you. Any sound clips?

I still vote for leaving the muffler and cutting the resonator off of the side with the valve while having the valve working.
It would surprise me if no one has tried that yet.
It seems to be getting little louder as time goes by...kinda weird i think..or maybe its just me. But some rasp has shown its ugly face at around 1800ish rpms....the sweet spot my car loves to be in....
I hate that rasp...But I refuse to spend 1k on an exhaust system that does not have that much performance benefit.
I might have to add some resonators or weld the secondaries back up... I will have to do some research how to get ride of the rasp...this exhaust is a PITA
But meowless DP's are awesome...I probably should have stopped there....

I would love to try this^....but I dont really feel like chasing around the stock muffler by cutting it up to make it sound good...only to have it sound horrible by some chance and have to reinstall it...Every time I remove something (muffler, 2nd cats), I have either drone, or rasp, Except for ***, there awesome. If anything im gonna just replace it with a magnaflow or borla

Find a used one? There is no guarantee you won't have drone with aftermarket either. And this is coming from a guy who bought a set of +$1000 exhaust that everyone else says wont drone at all...

I have a 2008 535i, I would recommend not to remove the secondary cats. I went with the magnaflow and like it. I did remove the secondary cats later to have to install secondary race cats

Yeah man, that's a good idea and a good point. Just because it doesn't drone on one set-up, doesn't mean it wont drone on another.

Dang man...wish I would have none that a few days ago...lol...could have saved a few bucks.

Ok guys....
I went to one of the exhaust shop dudes...and he suggested that I buy a magnaflow dual 2.5 in and dual 2.5 out to weld up in and replace the stock resonator and run 2.5 inch ***** out the back with some tips, deleting the stock muffler too...or...do the same configuration with a single 3 inch in and dual 2.5 out magnaflow muffler...I'm not sure which would be better...
Also would having the muffler that far forward cause more drone?
I am thinking about adding some 12 or 18 inch vibrant resonators too....Might even do an electronic cutout
Any thoughts?

If you're considering running a custom setup that uses a Magnaflow muffler, then I would suggest getting the Magnaflow 16553 catback kit off the Ebay seller that has in the auction subtitle that he "will accept up to 25% off the auction price for a Best Offer."
I just checked and the subtitle doesn't say that anymore, so I think maybe Magnaflow made them stop doing that as a MAP violation. But if you good the right terms it shows up with the auction, 130664706263. It comes out to $787.25 if you take the 25% off.
One of the best sounding custom setups I heard was a Borla setup shown in an old Youtube video.

That being said, I absolutely love my RPi setup.
Thanks for the reply man...
After the DP's.... I ended up doing the secondary *** delete with 2 vibrant 1790's, the stock resonator and the muffler delete
It sounds great, no rasp not to much drone and it sounds awesome top end.
All the research, this seemed to be the best option. I am in Hawaii....shipping is crazy on small stuff much less an exhaust system
Anyways man, I saw on another post that you were gonna get some New inlets..How does that perform on stock turbos...I am very interested in doing some inlets on my stock snails but all the research I found stated it didnt do too much without E85 or meth....Might run meth, just haven't decided yet
If you are getting new inlets....you gonna sell those RB's lol?

I'm running a set of these Magnaflow 14816's on my E38 as they're very popular in the E38/E39 world. After seeing how HUGE the stock muffler is and having one rusted outer tip, I'm curious how well one of these $120 makers mufflers would sound on an I6 because they sound great on V8's.

What's up guys. So I am trying to modify my exhaust on my 08 535. I bought a muffler from Megan Racing and the inlet on it is 2.5 inches. But the stock piping is 3 inches correct? If I go from the 3in to the 2.5in inlet on the muffler will I be restricting flow?
I plan on converting to a dual system with quad tips so essentially the "M5 look" So any advice on that would be a big help!
