early n54 vs late n54 engine swap - N54Tech.com

Hello

so I am doing an engine swap on my 2008 535xi N54

the donor engine is from 2009 535xi. I know there might be a difference between the 6 bolt and 8 bolt.

if the engine has the 6 bolt pattern, can this be fixed by replacing the fly wheel to be 8 bolt pattern?

so basically my question is can using a newer n54 on an older n54 be done if replacing fly wheel (to go from 6 to 8 bolts)? or is there any other differences preventing the swap?

Availability maybe?

I'm no expert but would think if you just swapped out the flywheel/flexplate for the one with the appropriate amount of bolts your crank has you should be fine.

The number of flywheel bolts changed between 2008 and 2009.

Guess I misunderstood, think we need more info on the donor engine, maybe it has a flywheel rather than a flex plate or vice-versa.

I am in the middle of the exact thing you are doing, I have a 2008 with bad engine and a donor from a 2009. Both are 535xi but the donor is 6 bolt vs the my car is 8 bolt. I researched and it Seems like it works as others have said, I might reach out to you for questions during my swap as this is my first swap but I am familiar with the bmw n52 and N54 engines.
