N55 135i Multiple Misfires and Fuel-related Codes -
09-03-2018, 11:15 AM
Looking for some advice from my fellow N55 friends…
Experiencing multiple cylinder misfires and fuel codes - any insight on the most-likely root issue would be much appreciated.
2012 N55 135i M-Sport
Symptoms:
- long start
- rough idle
- white smoke from exhaust
- sometimes engine barely runs
- onboard computer shows fuel pump error but LPFP and HPFP have both been replaced
Codes:
- 2C90 Blow-Off valve mechanics -- Ignore, tuner code
- 2EFE Combustion misfires, several cylinders detected
- 2F03 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
- 2EE0 Combustion misfiring, several cylinders, fuel injection deactivation*
- 2EF1 Combustion misfiring, cylinder 5: Fuel injection deactivation
- 2F00 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
- 2EE7 Combustion misfiring, cylinder 2: Fuel injection deactivation
- 2F04 Cylinder 6 misfire
- 2EF4 Combustion misfiring, cylinder 6: Fuel injection deactivation
- 2F02 Cylinder 4 misfire
- 2EED Combustion misfiring, cylinder 4: Fuel injection deactivation
- 2C01 High pressure fuel system, fuel pressure: Minimum pressure undershot
- 2BF5 Rail pressure sensor, plausibility: Minimum pressure undershot
- 2EE2 Combustion misfiring, several cylinders: damaging exhaust gas after start sequence
- 2EF3 Combustion misfiring, cylinder 5: damaging exhaust gas after start sequence
- 2EF6 Combustion misfiring, cylinder 6: damaging exhaust gas after start sequence
Recent Changes:
- Replaced LPFP with Fuel-It Stage 2 LPFP
- Replace HPFP with OEM Remanufactured
Relevant Mods:
- BMS JB4
- BMS Cold Air Intake
- Evolution Racewerks Charge Pipe
- Fuel-It Stage 2 Low Pressure Fuel Pump
- DV+ Performance Diverter Valve
- NGK 5992 / 95770 1-Step Colder Plugs
Logs from today attached.
I am pretty new to this, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Looks like the ecu is under attack, don't change anymore parts until you can confirm the mosfets are not fried. The erratic misfiring is a dead giveaway.

I replaced the Fuel Pressure Sensor yesterday - no change.
So now I have a brand new LPFP from Fuel-It, a new OEM remanufactured HPFP, and a new Fuel Pressure Sensor.
The onboard computer still says the Fuel Pump is bad but the 2C01(High pressure fuel system, fuel pressure: Minimum pressure undershot) and 2BF5 (Rail pressure sensor, plausibility: Minimum pressure undershot) are gone.
The white smoke from the exhaust is now even more - a lot of white smoke that smells very strongly like gas - both idling and driving.
Where should I look next? Is it likely that one of the Fuel Pumps I replaced is bad?
What does the massive amount of white smoke that smells like gas tell us?
Current codes:
2EFE Combustion misfires, several cylinders detected
2F03 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
2EE0 Combustion misfiring, several cylinders, fuel injection deactivation*

White smoke I do not think it's due to lack of fuel.

I had a similar issue on a customer's 135i. We changed the HPFP and then the car had the same issues as yours, car would misfire above 12 psi, the issue was a bad remanufactured HPFP, ordered a brand new one from my local dealer and issues gone!

Was there ever a resolution to this? I'm having the exact same problem (same codes, same thick, white fuel-smelling smoke from the exhaust). I've replaced the HPFP and swapped plugs/coils around with no success.
