Default Tuned an i8 today - 09-20-2016, 06:14 PM

Hey guys,

Had a local customer swing by with an i8 to play around with. Really sexy looking car. After 15 minutes we managed to finally find the gasoline engine, lol. In the trunk under several removable panels.

The good news is it's basically a MINI B38 engine and uses the same electronics. We installed a Stage1 tune and motor responded nicely.

In a week or two he's going to drop it off again so we can do some more advanced VBOX metrics with it and see how much further we can safely push the tuning.

That's awesome! I've been thinking about picking one up in November. Only thing that's been holding me back is the 3cyl engine and the M5!

Great to see Terry. His i8 looks just like mine.

Can you make a tune with a linear boost profile where boost increases with RPM? The car has a crap load of torque from the battery but the top end is pathetic, so I want to move the powerband up. No more additional boost until maybe 3,500 rpm scaling to peak boost maybe by 6,000 and then scaling down as it reaches redline.

I wasn't planning on it as the car felt under powered to me at all phases. And you can always just half throttle it down low if you want? My plan was to add as much power as safely possible at all engine speeds.

Hey Terry maybe I can come by and give you another ride. And do roll-ons at various RPMs. It has gobs of torque - hits as hard as a Porsche turbo or a tuned M3 in the mid range (say in the 2,500 - 4,000 rpm range) but then just dies out beyond that.

With additional boost in the mid-range it will exceed max torque thresholds. But if higher boost is built in later in the rpm range, max torque might not increase. The owner of this car in the i8 forum mentioned that he got a CEL and BMW actually called him to bring the car in. Didn't know that technology even existed....but Big Brother is now watching. Although he restarted the car and everything was fine....but that's the kind of thing I want to avoid.

Spent a bit more time on this. To get the full effect we're going for we need to also access the TMAP sensor, #9 in this photo. Unfortunately there is no easy way to reach it. So until we come up with some way to reach it the project is on hold.

We determined reaching the required TMAP sensor is just not practical so it was i8 JB4 aborted.

It’s better that way. The i8 is an embarrassment to BMW. While Audi was giving us the R8, and Mercedes the SLS, somehow BMW thought it was a good idea to compete with this pathetic 3 cylinder electric turd as their halo car? What pure idiocy. The halo was a stupid place to start playing with electric unless they were going to add it to an N63. Electric behind a Mini engine doesn’t say halo, it’s says econobox. $150k econobox.

That’s where the i8s power train belongs.

Nothing about it being goofy and in the same category as the 3 GT and Aztek?
