Just bought a 2020 X5 M50i -
10-08-2019, 01:23 PM
I've used JB4s on my last 2 BMWs; a 2014 328i, and a 2016 340i..... both with great success.
Admitedly, a bit frustrated with all the CELs that popped up about 45-50% of the starts.... and I'm an American living in Belgium with a US spec car. I thought outside the US, the JB4 would "auto-clear" like it used to before they did that mandatory update over a year ago.
Doesn't matter. I just ordered a 2020 X5 M50i. It is scheduled to arrive in January 2020.
My question is..... Is a JB4 even worthwhile? The M50i is essentially just a factory tuned version of the X5 50i.... and the numbers from the JB4 tuned X5 50i aren't "that" far off from the stock numbers of an X5 M50i.
Is it really even worth it to spend $700 on "maybe" 15-20hp?
Or.... are the numbers going to be considerably higher than stock???
2020 X5 M50i - on order. ETA Jan 2020.

Passive delete is an option you can select in the app. Did you select it? On the B58 BMW also changed the way code delete works so we have an update for that posted.
On the M50i I think it's worth it.. Of course, I'm biased. Why not do a Stage1 if you just want an easy 30-40hp?

Thats probably what happened, is that I didn't get the update. No big deal or anything, I was just something I lived with. I'm sure if I buy another JB4 the software will be up to date.
So do we have any dyno figures specifically for the M50i? You are saying 30-40hp???

We don't have any M50i specific dynos for the X5 yet but that is what the gains look like based on the testing we've done. You can always try the Stage1 and return it if you're not happy but I think the gains will be noticeable.

Understand. It's the same engine as the M850i, so presumably the numbers will be the same. Car doesn't arrive till January, so I'm going to keep an eye out for someone else to use it first, and see what the results are.

Terry..... gotta be honest. I just read through every post on this forum..... and every single one of them are people having problems using a JB4 on this platform.... and even unstances of you saying that tuning this platform is complicated.
That concerns me.... a lot.
I never had any problems with my JB4s on my last 2 BMWs..... this has me deeply concerned though.
There's no "success" stories anywhere.
Particularly for only "maybe" 30-40 hp.

This is the support forum so you're generally only going to read about people asking for support here.
But it seems like you're confusing chassis though. The N63 and N63TU from F chassis are the problem children. Especially the older N63 which is deeply flawed from the factory to the point of serious recalls for misfires and other problems that always wind up becoming our headache to support when people tune them.
G chassis and the newer models never an issue.

Can you use the JB4 mobile app to view parameters and clear codes on the stg1?? Or would I need to purchase the JB4 + bluetooth module for that?
Still waiting on specific reports/dynos/quarter-mile times on the X5/6 M50i

JB4 with bluetooth module is what you would need to do that.

Who told you that the M50i is just a tuned version of the 50i? Thats not even close to true. They have 2 different versions of the N63, the N63B44D and the N63B44C (aka N63R). Go through the ETK, there are tons of part differences, from the short block, to the turbos themselves.
I'm fully expecting to see 600hp+ out of the N63B with a tune and perhaps a bit of ethanol.

X7 M50i -

Hey brand new to the site. Ran the beta Jb4 on my 2018 M550i, not sure at all what the numbers were, but seat of the pants was decent. I just took delivery of the 2020 X7 M50i. Terry has been very helpful, very hands-on, awesome product, decided to order the newer model for correct fitment, but I’m still a little confused. I don’t do the tuning myself, I want to learn a little more. I just ordered the N63r for the new truck, my guy at BMW actually installs it. Is there anything he needs to know about the new set up? The EWG connectors, any tuning advice, anything that will help get the 50 or 60 hp we’re looking for? Appreciate any and all advice, like I said I’m brand new to this, would love to learn.
