What's the verdict on RB Next Gen's from a reliability view?

There should be a good few of these on N54's by now, and hopefully the previous generations documented issues are a thing of the past?

I got the classics with upgraded cartridges from the next gens and they are happy after 5000km and making 413rwk, cant complain.

Another "got a buddy" story, but I do have a friend with a 135 that had his next gets installed 4 months ago and they are rattling like a mofo already.

I put roughly 30k on my 15t RBs (38k installed, removed around 70k on the car) no issues.

In terms of reliability, i think the next gen/15t stuff in general may be the most tried/true.

That being said, I also dont think guys wanting to push 27-30 psi through any hybrid have room to complain about reliability lol

Asking about reliability of certain parts is a crap shot full of confirmation bias on both ends. The key question to ask should be about the history quality control and after sales service from the vendors you are buying from.

On those two issues, RB aren't known for being the greatest...at all..

We continually sell a lot of RB Next Gens and they certainly have been our most popular turbo selection for nearly a year now. The good news is that they generate a lot of praise by those who have purchased them and reliability of this product has been beyond stellar, truly a great product for a vendor to sell and a consumer to purchase all around.

As there are now nearly 100 sets of these (around 200 units) in the world perhaps some who have actually purchased them may chime in with their firsthand experiences; but our experience in selling them has been beyond pleasurable.

The best data we have comparing them are some logs showing the RB Next Gens are spooling better, and we have seen some pump gas dynos one at 503rwhp another and 528rwhp- of course we do not recommend trying this and think it could be asking for engine carnage but was still impressive nonetheless.

Let's not forget that even upgraded turbos will eventually rattle. It's the nature of a vacuum based internal wastegate, don't blame the rbs when they seem to be a very reliable product.

why is your log showing your AFR's so rich at the top? 11.6 at 6000rpm is a little heavy in my opinion so I am curious to know if the tune was set up that way?

Kind of an old thread here but this is WELL worth noting about the RB Next Gen offering in regards to time in service vs. reliability:

-We have now shipped around 150 sets of these units since production began in 9/2015
-We have had no reported complaints of smoking
-We have had only 2 sets come back to date, 1 set (overspun/high EGT damaged a hot side turbine fin) June 2016 and a set in November 2016 (appeared to be overspun and/or surged front turbo which led to catastrophic failure necessitating entire turbo replacement).
NOTE: The latter customer claims to have replicated the same catastrophic failure immediately thereafter (a delayed) reinstallation in April 2017 but has yet to send back.

Summary: ONLY 2 customers running the RB Next Gen product have had issues that led to returned turbos (both of which appeared to be abuse/end user error issues) in over 2 years and approximately 150 sets (300 units) in service. Thus this product has been rock solid with tremendous success in reliability and thus an overwhelmingly happy customer base.

I only have a few hundred miles on my next Gens since install. I’m at 450hp & 500Tq at 18 boost reading it off my P3. The sound of the turbos spinning is worth it all. Anyone out there going thru the motions of replacing turbos call or email Rob. Rob listened to what my needs were & sold me a package that works for me. My mechanic said it best when he said you get what you pay for. Do your self a favor & record yourself when you see how big the inlets are that come with your package.

Looks like we hit a landmark of 2.5 years of production on the RB Next Gens. The great news is that ALL of the above still holds true aside the # of setups out there and the time in service is just growing...

Quick full production recap on the RB Next Gen setups (# of complaints/issues/problems) including all shipments from 9/2015:

2015- 0.
2016- 2 customer issues.
2017- 0.
2018- 0 to date meanwhile holding the cricket tone strong.

Not really any drama so no one will probably be as excited about it... but pretty freaking amazing platform accomplishment regarding this product!

Just goes to show when tuned and maintained properly and not pushed out of their efficiency range they are bulletproof
