Hi guys - I posted this on the 5 series.net forum and couldn't get a reply. Has anyone done this before?

I am trying to replace my exterior chrome trim around the four doors with the shadowline black trim. I currently have all the parts, but the DIY thread I was going to use was an outdated thread and not applicable to my car, 2010 535i xdrive.

I called a local BMW stealership and was quoted 6 hours at $145/hour, so almost a grand to replace. I know I can do the job, but the big issue is the two front doors lower trim pieces which go under the side view mirror, and I have no idea what to do there without guessing and risking breaking something.

Any ideas? Please nobody reply with vinyl or taping...those are for my hockey stick.

Go to a body shop and get a labor quote. One the bmw dealership recommends. Since they will have experience with bmw's. And a much cheaper labor rate.

Appreciate the feedback, you were the only person to reply on multiple foums. I did go to a dealership and they told me almost a grand and didn't want to recommend an alternative. So I went to a local indy who recommended a body shop. They are doing the install on Monday, all-in will be $250 which is awesome.

There are two places which had the trim for my 2010 535i. Tischer and Penske Parts.

Penske Parts is a more exensive but thats because it is BMW of Warwick. You can ask for 20% off and you should get it. All in about $450.

These are the part numbers:

Mine is a Sport, so already came with black trim.
It totally transforms the appearance of the car. Well worth doing.
You can also buy black vinyl tape, but obviously it will not be as durable or look as clean.
Changing the side markers is also a nice touch and easy to do. They are LEDs and look much more updated. About $30 on ebay. Either clear or smoked glass finish.
I updated the interior and license plate lights to LED and did some swapping around to get the lumens strength balanced in the dome lights. Everything looks so much crisper and modern. The difference in the trunk was unbelievable, you can actually see what's in there now.

Avoid all of that swap work and spend $20 on two cans of black plastidip spray, painters tape and a roll of brown Kraft paper at Home Depot. I just did this to my 335 last weekend and it's incredible how durable the plastidip is if you use 3+ coats. Just make sure you allow ample time to dry.

I went the plastidip route on all the trim, grills, and rims and it turned out great. I'm in it about $100 for all of it. I do recommend watching a few videos first, and take your time with the prep work. Prep means everything.

Theres a website that sells black vynl stickers to wrap those parts. As a 3rd option.

Funny how I specifically requested no wrapping or vinyl comments/options but that seems to be what everyone likes doing. I got a body shop to do the install for $175 so all is good...no need for ghetto honda civic vinyl.
