Default Remove dynamic drive sways? They are leaking. - 05-21-2017, 10:31 PM

I plan to repair my leaking dynamic drive sways. But have thoughts of completely removing this system. I feel like having solid sways will eliminate one more thing that can go wrong as it currently did.

I plan to remove them, clean them, reapply new sealant to the boots and re-install. Not sure if this will work, but it beats paying $1800 for a new sway bar. For that price tag it has to be less expensive to remove the system.

How is this thing mounted to the subframe?

If you were to remove them the easy part will be the physical replacement to a normal swaybar. You'll also need to code out that option on your car. Most dealers can probably do it, but I doubt any shadetree coder has figured out that obscure option yet.

They all leak, 5s, 6s, 7s, x5s etc. mine were leaking with 40k on them. Just top off with an ounce or 2 every oil change.

Replace it with another dynamic/active sway bar? Plenty of guys parting E6x's nowadays, I usually see a few on Craigslist that are local.

Thats the plan for now. I'd like an inexpensive fix or removal of them. I hate leaks, donut will get resolved.

Id like to find a more permanent solution than to put another unit that will leak. Even new ones will eventually leak and are not guaranteed to last.

Removing the system is a bad idea. Headache plus you lose the positive effects of dynamic Drive . Replace with a new or used unit, or fix the current one.

My first fix will be to try to find a way to reseal the boots to the pump and shaft. For the best seal I would need something that dries a little flexible bit will bond to the materials of the pump, bar, and boot. Oh yea, and it has to be resistant to oil.

Maybe I could spray my sway bar with that spray sealer in a can you see on tv that will seal anything. Totally joking.....can anyone recommend a product that fits my description above.

Rtv gasket makers/sealant will fit that bill. I'd stick with the black. You dont want Grey as it dries rigid. And other colors are for specific purposes that don't apply to what you are doing.

A threaded bung with thread locker, I'd imagine.

I would crossreference parts from a non dynamic drive 535i and replace parts accordingly.

But i doubt the system will be removed.

It doesn't look like removing this system is all that bad. I removed the front dynamic drive and repaired the leaking boots. After being in there, I am convinced this system will be much easier to remove and install than I had originally thought. First thing first. Here is a thread I started detailing how I fixed the leak.

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50028

Now here is a list of all the parts I will be removing if I move forward.

Front:

Rear:

I may create a separate post about selling this system if anyone is interested in these parts. If you know anyone that has an E60 and wants to convert to dynamic drive, please let me know!

Forgot to compare pump and steering lines. more research needed. Which is good because I noticed my active steering is leaking on the steering column. I will be posting about that later.

Just landed a parts car that does not have active steering or dynamic drive. So this Removal will be happening soon. If anyone knows anyone that may be interested in retrofitting these options in their e60 please let me know, I will have a complete e60 DynamicDrive/ActiveSteering Retrofit soon. I would prefer to leave my car wired for these features, but if I get a good price I may separate the wire harness from the computers to fuse box to end devices, but the price would have to be really good for that. But then there should be no soldering and have all oem wiring in the car.

Contents will include:
-Active Steering rack
-Active Steering computers
-Dynamic Drive front and rear sway bars and mounts
-Dynamic Drive computers
-Dynamic drive hydro box
-Dynamic Drive / Active Steering power steering pump
-All oil lines associated with Dynamic drive and Active Steering

Some items may not be included as I have kept as many bolts hoses and items that are interchangeable. These items should be found on the car it will be fitted to. Another item that will have to be sourced is wiring., but I will pull all wire harnesses from the car and label for a true oem install. But this will take forever and will cost much extra. You will have to find a source to code in the options.

If you are just passing through, post your thoughts on what I should charge. I have totaled well over $7000 worth of parts and counting; This should include everything needed to install dynamic drive and active steering into a e60.

Remeber....You will be able to sell the items you pull off your car for some reimbursement to cut the cost.
