Default Fuel-It! Stage 2 upgrade DIY request & discount. - 12-17-2014, 04:23 PM

Hey guys,

We have a request and an opportunity for somebody.

The 5 Series we hoped to be getting has been delayed until that seller finds their replacement vehicle. Consequently we are not able to do our own DIY at this time. Jeremy did a great job of documenting the initial steps and giving an overview but we'd like to get a good DIY with lots of pictures and descriptions similar to our installation procedures for the 1 and 3 series.

We need somebody that is looking to do the upgrade immediately to help us out with that. For that, not only will your upgrade get shipped out this week but you'll get an additional refund of $100 when you send back your core and submit the pictures with brief descriptions as needed.

If anybody is interested, please PM us. We will select that candidate based on the first to contact us that has a good understanding of what they are doing and the ability to take a lot of GOOD pictures.

Thanks!
Fuel-It!

Nice. I'd volunteer but working in retail during Christmas is eating up all my time right now.

Suggest running the tank down to a quarter or less, makes the job much easier.
Be very careful with the sending arm when you lift the right side bucket out. It has a small plate at the top with 2 tiny spring needles that make contact with he plate. It is easy to get them slightly bent, and then your fuel gauge won't read right which is problematic for 85 blends. (Inaccurate tank reading. I messed up mine and had to buy a new one, $80).
I recommend lifting out the bucket halfway, then unclipping the sending arm and fish it out last.
When dropping in the new bucket, leave it off at first. Focus on getting the hoses across he saddle in the tank. You want to push them towards the rear of the tank. Point the ends towards the rear middle and jiggle them until they clear across. Do not force them too much. Helps to have a buddy catching them on the left side.
The Quick Connectors can be stubborn. Press down, then press the protruding prongs and pull up. I had to use some pointy tools to get a couple of them to release.

After I did my Stage 2 pump I got error codes re low pressure in the LPFP line. It still drops pressure rapidly after I turn off the car. Doesn't seem to affect pressure when engine is running. Wonder if others will experience the same?

The Walbro 450 and the Y after the line we upgrade all have check valves in them that won't allow fuel to flow back to or through the pump. Nothing beyond that point is modified.

You need to check your filter, the connections to your filter and venturis, as well as the connections between the filter and the rail.

Hit a snag disconnecting the "quick" disconnects on the drivers side. See the attached photo. Any tips? I've tried pinching the tabs together, no luck. I also tried pulling them back slightly (and they snapped off!).

Your tab is broken and should look like this.
Name: 535i connector.jpg
Views: 778
Size: 228.9 KB

When you push those tabs in, they pull the inner ring back away from the filter to release the quick connect fitting on the filter housing. You are going to have to put a screw driver in there and manually push them back.

Look at the new assembly we sent you and watch the actuation when you push those tabs in to get an idea as to what I'm talking about.

Steve, the second one came off like butter. That first one was just stuck/binding and didn't want to release. I found that when I pushed the connector towards the filer and then twisted it back and forth a bit before pressing the tabs, it released very easily. That first one was just stuck and I should have wiggled it around a bit before messing with those tabs too much. The second quick connect was very easy to take off.

The fuel pump is installed and working like a champ! I did a video of the install. It's a bunch of clips that I'll patch together with commentary and send over to you. I hope it's OK to post it in the DIY section here too to help our fellow 535 owners.

I just filled up with e60 and am about to load up the backend e60 map/flash. I'll make some runs & take some logs with the car tomorrow.

Have a great night and thanks for your help. I can't wait to see how the car feels going from e30 to e60. DP's are on and FMIC will be going on as soon as it arrives. Woohoo!

Perfect timing. I'm picking up my pump from the post office tomorrow so hopefully the video helps make the install easy.

Don't wait! That thing needs to be in your car asap. Got a chance to make some runs with the new pump today and the car felt GREAT! These videos are going to take me half a day to edit and I'm booked most of this weekend so I'm just working on it here and there at night (lots of little clips to sort through and patch together). Should be done soon though. In the mean time, I mostly went by this link:

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27902

That's a great write up. The install its self can be done in less than an hour. It probably took me a total of about 2 hours, mostly because I was stopping a lot to read or to turn the camera on/off. It's really not all that bad of an install at all. Pretty straight forward.

I know the edited video will help but I'm telling you, you'll want to get that pump in the car before then =)

Hey so since the fuel filter is out did any of you guys replace it with a new one? Just thinking it might be a good time to replace. Any thoughts on this.

I didn't replace the filter but that definitely would have been a good time to do so.

Good news, I sat down and got the video editing all wrapped up. It's "producing" right now and should be ready for YouTube upload in an hour or two. It shows all the steps of the process and is about 20 minutes long. If someone knows these cars well, or if this was their second or third time installing one of these pumps, the whole job could definitely be done in less than 45 minutes. I'm going to hit the sack and will upload it in the morning and post the link here for everyone. I'll also stick it in a DIY thread too.

Here's the link to the install video. Sorry about it being a little blurry and not a lot of light. Just let me know if you have any questions:

I'll post it up as a DIY thread with more details and such when I get back to a computer later today. Good luck with the install, you'll love the pump.

There are a couple BMW shops in AZ, however we are not one of them.

We do primarily R&D, manufacturing, and the occasional fuel pump installation.

Your car is not very common among the performance crowd...but if you get to a point where you need a fueling solution...we'll be happy to look in to that for you.

So I finally got a day off today and did the install. Big thanks to abailey, Steve, and jwdominick for the pics and install notes. I pretty much followed the steps in the previous installs. The only 2 things I did different was covered the back seat area with plastic and used a 4' length of wire. The plastic cover helped keep the gas from spilling in the cab since I want to feel the fuel and not smell it. I also had a small igloo foam cooler I had in the foot well in front of the pump side to catch all the fuel. Worked out good and there wasn't a mess. I unlike you guys used a wire to fish and pull the hoses over since I could only fit up to the middle of my forearm into the tank. Once installed the car started right up and my fuel gauge works so I didn't mess it up. Steve, the build quality is great and it plugged right up. I'll do logs over the next few days to see how it handles the map tuning changes the guys are doing.
