My intakes are finally done. Just test fit them to the car. It’s a lot tighter than I thought. Tight enough that I couldn’t install my heat shields. Not feeling much power wise, though the car is otherwise stock right now. There are some interesting sounds though, including that blowoff sound when it shifts.

This will be my only chance to test these, as I’m trading the M550 in soon. I need an SUV. This set may be available at some point, and if anybody wants to copy them, be my guest. Just don’t make money off them.

Anyway, are intakes worth it for this motor? I’d say Yes, just for the sound.

Couple of notes:

There’s no way to keep the stock air box bottoms like BMS does with the M5. Our bottoms have dividers running through the middle that are in the way. They could be cut off, but that’s not really an option for the 90% of us that lease.

The pipes get HOT. Wish I would have taken a new pic with my FLIR. They’ll need some sort of ceramic paint or coating for street use. On the highway it’s a non-issue. The air doesn’t have a chance to heat up. I originally had heat shields on the filters, but they ended up not fitting in the space available.

If I had a pipe bender I could have gotten a better fit. It’s going to take a compound bend to get everything centered up.

Anyway, I got about $120 in parts and maybe 4 hours of work in them and they’re pretty much the same as what others charge $500 or more for. Not bad IMO.

Looks good, with better bending I think you could keep the stock airbox bottoms in there which would make a big difference in real world performance. Some day we'll get around to releasing an intake for it.

Thanks Mike for all you have done for this platform. I own my m550i free and clear. I am also a little pissed no one wanted to develop the platform more then it is. Anyways, good luck on your new car. Il keep a eye out for your comments.

Mike, did you notice any improvement when you installed your intakes? Could careless about sound. Do you see a cost benefit by adding intakes? (short ram)

Power wise, not really. I was already running BMC filters with the carbon filters removed, so I doubt just going to the conicals added much power. Maybe a bit of throttle response. The real gain is the sound.

If you do it, you can get the proper couplers through siliconeintakes.com. Thats where I got all my parts from.
