Default N54 reliability - 03-13-2021, 07:10 PM

I am looking at a couple very low priced N54 cars (135i and 335i) with 100K on the clock. How reliable are these cars after 100K miles? I am looking for one to use as a daily. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Pandora's box. But worth it if you are a patient DIY, or lucky enough that the top 10 issues are already addressed prior to purchase.

Soo many posts (others and myself) listing items to look at.

Dig in (research, research, read), ask specific questions and you'll get answers.

Our 2008 535xi has about 230k on it. It's unmodified. I have replaced the HPFP and water pump. Oil changes and plug swaps, mostly. I did upgrade injectors but some of the original ones were leaking.

The N54 get's a bad rap because of maintenance. If it is done the cars are very reliable. I have had 2 and never once did they leave me stranded. Except when snapping axles at the strip of course, but that was my own doing.

If you DIY you will be fine. The car is easy to work on and plenty of DIY videos and threads. If you are going to pay a shop for everything I hope you have a big wallet.

It's still probably the best bang for your buck given the performance you can get out of them. 5k car, 1k in mods, 400hp/450tq at the wheels. The fact you can get them in awd and a manual is pretty slick as well.
