Default Discussion about n54 mods - 03-30-2021, 11:37 AM

The n54 is 10 years old now and has an amazing diversity in aftermarket performance parts. There are so many things available that it's quite hard to filter down the noise for a noob like me.

After hours of searching on the internets I have made a list of things I assume I want first:

Bigger intercooler

Charge pipe, blow off valve


Intake routerlogin 192.168.l.l

I wonder about your recommendations for these parts?

There are conflicting reports that the intake does any good. Some claim that the factory default one is better than some "performance parts". Is that true?

If I do these upgrades, do I have to upgrade breaks and suspension too?

I'm a noob so please be gentle.

After all maintenance is done.....
Valve cover
Coolant system

1 d*wnp*p*s
2 chargepipe, bov, intakes
3 intercooler
4 jb4 or flash
5 fuel pump
6 inlets
7 drive the sh*t out of it till stock turbos blow
8 add another fuel pump
9 big twins or single turbo
10 port injection

Basics I've learned with 3+ years of ownership and FBO:

Maintenance before mods. Mods will exacerbate existing problems. Get the
car running great then mod. Expect problems once modded (misfire, various
codes etc). The forum can help you sort it all out with proper logging.

Power/results for dollars spent in order (my opinion):
  • Tune - most here end up with a JB4 + Flash/ecu tune specific for their set
    up. Some are happy with flash/ecu only tunes, I prefer both
  • Fuel (octane/ethanol), ethanol is easy and if you add an ethanol tune=Wow!
  • Everything else to support/push the tune and fuel (charge pipe, BOV, exhaust, fuel pumps, meth, and on and on)

Mod, Log, Adjust (fix, repair), repeat
