Default Waterpump or Thermostat? - 05-02-2017, 08:57 AM

After driving 10+ miles

Chain of events:

Felt a serious lack of power.
Noticed that the radiator fan was on and loud.
Yellow coolant warning light.
Red coolant warning light and limp mode.

Pulled over at the side of the road:

The engine bay didn't seem that hot for driving 10 miles
The big coolant hoses at the front on the bay were only warm.
The coolant level was OK, no visible leaks.
Scanned for codes using MHD, 2E81 and 2E82.
Cleared codes and drove 1 miles home.

After letting it cool down in my garage for 1 hour:

On cold start the fan starts blaring after 10 seconds and stays on.

Is this a dead WP or just a faulty TS? How can it be failed pump if the engine is colder than usual when I pulled over at the side of the road after driving 10 miles? Should it not be extremely hot? Has the TS failed open?

Bit confused, just don't want to pay the money for a pump if its just the thermostat.

99.9% chance its the water pump. Just replace it and save yourself the headache of doing the job twice. To get to the thermostat, you have to remove the water pump anyways.

Just replace them both, you would be lucky to be that close to home when it actually goes out. I was about 580 miles from home when mine went out. Talk about headache$$$.

+1 to everybody's comments. Mine went out on the way home from work. My engine also didn't seem that hot but it was definitely the water pump. Several times I stopped to let the car cool down so I could make it partially down the road a little at a time to get home since it was 3 a.m and I wasn't about to attempt to call someone. Replaced the water pump, thermostat and U shaped hose. It was a headache to switch out so might as well do it all while you already got it apart.

Thats the water pump/TS on order, I done the bleed procedure to test the pump and it was making clicking noises and no fluid was flowing into the coolant reservoir.

N54 when its working =
