93 to 45%E85 to 75% E85 to 100%? -
07-17-2018, 06:36 PM
Hi there,
I have been progressively increasing/improving tuning and fuel on my M4. I am attaching 3 logs. Could you take a look at these and help me understand how the car is holding up? My goal is to get to 100% E85.
The name of each log notes which fuel, BEF, and jb4 map for reference.
Thanks!

Your 75% log looks healthy to me.

I used to know the safe levels of the fuel pumps on the N54 but I don’t know about the S55. Are they where they should be?

They look good to me. As long as they stay above 11 - 12
. I know on my n55 if they drop below 10 it starts to lean out and go into limp mode

Very healthy looking log at 75%. I'm on full e85 and have no issues so I don't think you would. Fill it up and get another log for me on map 2.

Thanks Payam! I finally went thru the rest of that tank and filled up with E85. Will post log soon (when it stops raining).
On another note though, both with 75% a few times, and too often with the 100%, I am getting a CEL because it keeps throwing 118001 codes, Mixture too lean.
It only happens during normal driving, have not even really floored it yet for more than a few seconds at low RPM.
Anything I can do to rectify?

That code comes and goes. I get a few times too and just clear it as it comes.

Here hey finally are! 2 logs with 100% E85 on map 2. How do they look? Would also be interested to know if map 7 may be a better option.
Thanks!

Actually get grip in 3rd; 1st and 2nd I enjoy using my foot to control, it's part of the fun!
Before going to map 7, I updated the BEF with the latest 08/02/18 release. It seems to have improved partial throttle a little but I'm feeling a hiccup in the 4,500-5,000ish RPM. Attaching logs.
On both this BEF and the previous, I'm having trouble when the car is warm only, to start. It cranks and cranks and won't start. After 3 or 4 tries, it eventually starts.
I've also noticed the downshifting (DCT) has become less precise. Seems to over rev then engage abruptly, makes for harsh shifts in sport mode. I guess the 100% E85 is pushing other systems in the car a little too far?
Any suggestions welcome.

I have experienced all of the same issues that you are having. A little hiccup in the 4500 range when I go WOT from say 3-3.5k rpm, although it is sporadic and doesnt happen all of the time. I am running map 7
Have you updated to the newest JB4 firmware? I had the DCT issue, but this latest firmware version has helped.
Cold start is still an issue, even with the new firmware and FUD #2 turned on. It always starts now, and doesnt die but it is not happy about starting and idles pretty rough for the first 25 seconds or so.
I have just chalked it up to "more power more problems" and am just going to live with it I guess. Car is too much fun on the tune to go back at this point.

With latest firmware and BEF the car is running much better. The DCT feels better than before but still not great. I am running Map 5. I haven’t tried map 7 yet because I’m losing grip in third and it’s hard to find a stretch of road to rev out 4th or 5th anyway. Will be upgrading tires soon and hopefully be able to crank it up. Plan is to have BMW flash the trans software with an update as I hear that helps a lot.

Had the trans software updated, hard to notice any difference in case anybody was wondering. At least they didn't charge me for it
I'm having what feels like fuel cut at the higher RPM, on map 5, with 100% E85. This only started happening as of the last 2 revisions of jb4 and flash firmware; not sure which is causing the problem. I assume a tad more power was squeezed via software and now my fuel pump may not be able to keep up. I'm attaching logs to see if we can figure it out. I have 3 different pulls here. One of them was a perfect example of what I mean. One of these seemed flawless. The other log is somewhere in between. I hope it's obvious thru the logs, because in the car it feels terrible.
On another note, the car has been stalling as I get going in 1st sometimes, if I'm not applying enough throttle (DCT). Again, only as of the latest firmware update.

My car does the stalling in first thing as well. Typically when creeping to a stop or when I am first taking off with very light throttle. It is a lot worse when the car is cold.
I think it may have something to do with my intake... not sure. It sure makes the DCT make a nasty noise if you try to push through, or just send you straight to neutral.

Can you provide more details about your mods?
aftermarket p-i-p-e-s?
Spark Plugs (how many miles, and at what gap)
E85 map version (e.g. E85_13 or E85_IGN_13)

Sure, BMS intake, jb4, MDH BEF, DCT, full E85.

Your IGN values seem to indicate that you're running E85_IGN (higher ignition advanced than standard E85 BEF). Can you confirm which one you're running exactly?
Either way, full E85 fuel mix runs best with the following supporting mods, which you did not list, so I'm assuming you don't have them:
1. NGK 97506 spark plugs gapped to 0.018" (very important)
2. Aftermarket d-o-w-n_p-i-p-e-s
3. Aftermarket c-h-a-r-g-e_p-i-p-e-s (recommended)
If you can't afford to do all of these mods now, you'll need to switch over to the RACE BEF, which has been tested to work with up to E50 fuel mixture. Still, the NGK 97506 plugs make a major difference even with just the RACE BEF.
Most people swap the OEM plugs out as soon as they get past the 500whp range.

Thanks for the feedback!
I don't want to do **'s. CP's I'm not opposed to, but they aren't the immediate issue.
I HAVE to run 100% E85 , can't stand mixing.
Are you seeing that the fuel pumps are NOT the issue?
Would you run the E85 BEF (not IGN) and do the sparkplugs then? Or do one without the other?
Thanks again!

I agree, mixing is a pain, that's why I only run pure 91 or pure E85.
I personally wouldn't do things this way, but if you install the NGK 97506 spark plugs at 0.018" gap, then you'll be able to do away with most of the hesitation.
Also, for FOL, set the value to 40 if you're running the E85_IGN BEF.
