Default Fuel-It! M4/S55 development thread - 02-21-2016, 04:52 PM

Hey All,

We finally received our M4 and so starts the testing and upgrade process.

It's a 2015 and is completely stock at this time so we loaded up our VBOX, plugged in the OBD link, and went out and to do a couple baseline runs for comparison. We'll also try and throw it on the dyno this week so we have that data as well.

Today was 80 degrees, we were running 91 octane, the section of track we use is virtually dead flat, and the same track we've tested all the other cars on.

Our best of 3 runs from 40-90mph was 5.33".

Name: Baseline VBOX.jpg
Views: 2097
Size: 22.7 KB

As a comparison, the best times thus far for our other test vehicles...

135i N54 = 4.2" (Not really pushing that car yet)
335i N55 = 4.42"
Mini JCW = 5.38" (With a shift on a maxed out stock turbo)

In looking at the log, there's a lot of low hanging fruit. Trims are slightly negative so we could probably add a couple gallons of E85 and the DME may give us a little more timing. Boost ramps up slowly, so there is a lot of torque left on the table.

Can't wait to get a JB4 on it...do some more testing, and then move on to E85, Pure Turbo's in April, and fueling upgrades!

Do you have an account with Bimmerpost or should I go ahead and share this on that forum?

Thanks, so are we. We've been working with Pure and TPG but it'll be nice to have our own test mule and move things along.

Steve,

Is your shop located in the East Valley? I'll be following your development, I'm South of Phoenix.

Also, do you think there is any benefit of running a couple gallons of E85 with 91 octane and stock tune(M4)?

I didn't see it really pulling any timing, so we didn't bother trying adding any E85. I'm sure once we start increasing the boost, then we'll need to start adding some E85.

JB4 arrived today so that will be going on next.

Got the JB4 Stage 3 installed today.

Still only running 91 octane so we started with map 3 (least aggressive).

Did two control runs with similar results as our original baseline runs.

We then did 2 runs on map 3. Timing looks pretty good so we'll continue to see how it does and then start adding some E85.

Here's the vbox screenshot and a couple logs.

Why's the throttle line on the graph all up and down? Shouldn't it go along with the pedal and rpm?

Pretty common on the N55's and S55's that haven't been flashed. Frankly haven't had much time to play with it much. We're running EWG wires, so as soon as we have enough octane we'll start doing some real tuning. Right now we're just gathering data.

Excellent, glad to hear more goodies coming in the S55 line. I like how you are tracking each step of the way, great data keeping.

Map 3 is 1/2 second faster over stock (40-90), that's pretty impressive for a mild map.

Real quick because I spent the morning on the dyno and have a lot to do.

We baselined the M4 on map 4 with 91 in the tank and it did 396.5/374.8.

Name: M4 on dyno.jpg
Views: 1875
Size: 303.5 KB

We then did map 3 on 91 and it did 411/434 but our fuel is junk and it was pulling some timing so we said screw it and made it an E30 mix.

With E30 we did:

Map 3 = 422/450
Map 1 = 443/450
Map 2 = 455/459
Map 5 = 468/463
Map 7 = 502/527
Map 6 = 513/558

Throwing much more boost at it didn't seem to make much more power, so we called it quits. Might be able to play with it more and extract a few more ponies but we want to move on to more upgrades. Despite it holding boost very well up top and timing looking great, power still fell off, so we need to address that. We also didn't spend a lot of time on the various maps letting it adapt, so there may have been more gains to be had on each map.

Here's a comparison between baseline and max power for the day.

Name: comparison.jpg

Size: 218.2 KB

Here's the log image for the 513/558

Name: 513_558.jpg

I've attached the other logs for each of the dyno runs posted.

Maybe I missed it, but are there any mods on this car at all at this point (for these dynos) or are they 100% stock?

I am very curious about the Map 5. We don't see a lot of dynos on it, I'll have to test on my own car. Thanks Steve.
