Default N54 coolant tank blew up - 10-01-2016, 10:36 AM

Hey guys and gyals

A little issue with the car.

The coolant tank blew up. I have since replaced the coolant tank with new one. Again the pressure seems to building inside the tank and steam and water is releasing from the cap.

oil temperature is fine. Water pump works properly during bleeding procedure.

Video to come soon

Any guesses before the vid?
could it be the head gasket?

In clip the top small hose from the top of the tank and run it in a bucket.
Do this on cold start up and take a video. Or take the cap off shine a light in
Res and let's see what's going on?

Water doesn't look like it's bubbling without the cap on and waterpump needs the system perfectly without any strange noises.

Also I don't live in a cold climate, everything so far is leading me to head gasket but the car has only 100k miles on it.

You'll need to take it to a garage so they can perform a sniff test on the coolant. If there's traces of combustion gases in the coolant it will tell you straight away. Are you sure the water pump is working correctly?

100% waterpump is working correctly, engine is at around 90•c oil temp while this is happening

I'm no expert but in that top picture are some of the tubes possibly blocked with some kind of a radiator repair fluid? The white stuff?

i think the white stuff is either residue from either the water or caused by heat, no rad fix has ever been sent down there i dont think.

Ill guess its safe to say its most likely the head gasket, so i need a new engine now :/

I dont think anything else could pressurize the system like that, however i will do a test by connecting the jb4 up and keeping an eye on water temps to see if the pressure is caused by heat or if it is from co2 gasses entering.

I wonder if a previous owner might have used some rad fix stuff though.

You should do the bleed process where you hold the throttle to get the pump staying on for 10 mins or so to check water circulates easily. I think it's also possible to over tighten some of the bleed screws so that water wont be able to flow. I'm sure you know the bleed screw is next to the filler cap. I think the other screw located down near the radiator is only for draining but not 100% certain.

Did you replaced the coolant reservoir cap when you replaced the reservoir itself?

Drain the oil, inspect it for coolant, pull the spark plugs look for coolant deposits. Is there lots of moisture coming from the tailpipes? A compression test will tell you right away if it's a head gasket or not.

I'm probably reading a SAE Paper...or in the garage.

Hope its not a head gasket causing excessive pressure in the cooling system and you dont need an new engine to fix it either. Good luck!

I have a spare n54 engine in the garage so I wont bother messing with this and just install the other engine in.

anything i should do while the engine is already out?

Hi n54teek,

I see your in the UK running the MHD Race BEF. Can i ask what map (boost) your running on the JB4 and what fuel you are using?

I seen another post saying you can run the MHD race flash ok on vpower nirtro+ so was thinking of doing same once i fit my new inlets and outlets.

Cheers

id say tesco99 is better due to higher octane = less chance of knock and more ethanol content

The VPower Nitro+ apparently claims 99ron these days but momentum is cheaper.

I had a 21psi tune from ***** running about 3 up to 7 degree tuning and it never seemed to have any timing drops. Never tried tesco on that tune but I did on 18-19psi tune with about 7 to 9 degree timing and was just showing signs of being too aggressive so I know the limit of Tesco and would not want to run that tune for long. Tesco is easier for me to get. Shell vpower is supposed to be 99 but shell won't say so could be more or less or maybe they don't want to say as it changes. Been tempted to buy and octain tester and actually see what we are running!

Do you guys have any logs for both Tesco and vpower?

Fuel blends vary throughout the year to adjust for the temp changes so what was once bad may be better and what was once great may not be as good.

To get over this you can add some ethanol yourself to increase the octane and efficiency of the engine. 7 to 9 degrees is not that much but I wouldn't go any higher unless using ethanol or water/meth injection. Personally I wouldn't run boost over 15 psi on just pump fuel. I feel the effective compression is just too stressful on the engine in those conditions.
