N55 owners who want open OBD flashing get in here!! -
07-29-2015, 10:35 AM
With all of the awesome progress lately on the N54 tuning/flashing side of things I have gotten extremely jealous . As most of us know the cobb flashing capabilities are in the stone age in comparison to even the cobb support for N54 (no vanos tables defined even, etc etc). Not to mention how handicapped we are compared to the new stuff that is being added to the N54 xdf's. Cobb has pretty clearly abandoned the BMW flashing game and are just riding on their good reputation now. @jyamona suggested putting a list together of people interested in furthering the N55 tuning so someone like @martial@mhd might be interested in adding N55 support to the MHD app (or anyone else with the necessary know how and skills). I would certainly ditch my Cobb and pay for an app or whatever if I could edit and define my own tables and flash the DME over OBD and not be stuck with what cobb decided was "good enough".
Chime in here if you are in the same boat and are interested in seeing this progress. Obviously the E9x N55's will be easiest (as cobb already proved they are flashable) but there are certainly a lot more F3x N55 cars out there so the ability to flash those cars at all would increase demand significantly.
Thanks guys!

Count me in. I'm available as a tester if needed...provided the solution looks solid.

I already tried multiple companies to get the F3x supported. Consensus is that without the keys from BMW, they won't be able to be done without opening up the DMEs and manually "unlocking" them.

Well I am in. I already have some base stuff done on mine. However the removal and opening / reinstall is always a pain. But once it's opened for the first time, they can read your key from your dme.
So now that i know my key it would be nice to self flash my car. But without a device it's not possible.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this subject and if I find a workable solution may purchase the necessary equipment/software to do multiples. We'll see...no promises.
Darkiedm4, do you have any idea what tool was used to open your DME?

They just pry it open with a knife/screwdriver. Only thing you have to pay attention to is that on some DME's in the middle the capacitors are glued to the top of the DME enclosure as well. So if you brute force it after opening the seal/glue between the top and bottom part you may damage the DME board/capacitors.

I'm definitely in on this one too, but I'm only looking for a way to "unlock" my DME so I can so I can add my own BEF.
All the tuners here in SoCal only offer custom mapping that doesn't work with anything but pump gas.

This has been a wish of mine for quite some time now. I have a Cobbable N55 but the Cobb is extremely limited on what it can alter. They say it can't be done, so someone do it and prove everyone wrong! How is the method used to implant the PPK different from this? Apparently that's pretty easy.

PPK is flashed on by a dealer or the Port. Its a BMW product, so they have the encryption info and keys so they can do it. It goes on just like any other DME update except they have to unlock it after writing.

On the F series flash tuning, thread is a waste of time. The tuners already know if they can release a workable solution they will reap huge profits. It's just a matter of one of them figuring it out and then monetizing it in a way that prevents others from copying them.

From what I'm hearing, the late E-series are the same as the early F-series. Its the Bosch MEVD series DMEs. Just can't get into them.

Just got mine a month ago, and I would love to be able to change parameters. Intake and jb4 were the first mods.

darkiedm4, I meant which software tool...CMDFlash, Kess, KTag, etc (if you know).
Also, from what I have seen, the Bosch MEVD17.2 is the Cobbable one. Any MEVD17.2.x seem to be the tricky ones. Though, I know even these can be programmed...but at great expense and effort. I'm doing the homework now to try and figure this out but it's not simple by any means.
The other issue is that a lot cars with these DME's are still under warranty...but they won't be after you split it open.
Does anyone know if there has been any work to develop an xdf for Tuner Pro for the N55? I would love to have a non-Cobbized look at my ROM.

I have a damos file for the mevd 17.2 f30 ecru but it only works on win ols and it needs to be translated to English. and tansfered into tuner pro but if we could get tuner pro working like they have for the n54 that would be nice.

Well if you have the tables and their settings defined in WinOLS, we could re-create that in Tuner Pro. It's a lot of work but someone has to start. Do you mind sending me your bin so that I can look at the tables?
