Default Doomsday Machine Plan - 12-11-2013, 12:50 PM

You know how cars run faster and more efficiently when there's more air pressure? Like, at or below sea level. How about we gang together and build a N54tech.com ULTIMATE JB4 DOOMSDAY MACHINE that increases the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere to increase the air pressure on the surface of the Earth by separating the O2 from the hydrogen in the oceans, eventually destroying all life, but making our cars a lot faster?

Good or bad plan?

We basically do this to all the water in the oceans: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_splitting

Basic stoichiometry says there will be two moles of H2 produced per mole O2 (33% oxygen). Atmospheric O2 concentration at sea level is around 21% so it would raise O2 concentration, making combustion more efficient.

I wonder how much liquid oxygen in a tank you would need per gallon of gasoline and if you could just inject the oxygen directly like the fuel and combust it? The energy needed to make and contain the oxygen probably wouldn't be efficient enough for anyone to do that though. At that point you might as well use other fuels. Or just strap a solid fuel rocket to your roof.

A single fuel component used for drive is the most efficient of course, if it can be contained efficiently (see electric cars).

Nitrous works in the same way. And rocket engines carry LOx because there is no oxygen in space.
