Default E60 M5 unimpressive? - 12-06-2013, 03:18 PM

Okay, not saying it's a horrible car or anything. Drove a friend's M5 to work for the past couple of days (he's out of town, needed services done on it). Compared to my 335i it feels slow. I am not saying that my car is a rocket ship or anything or that its the fastest thing on earth but the M5 just felt tired. I was really expecting alot more from a v10 M5. Is it maybe the surge of power from the turbos that give me that sense of feeling? I am sure the M5 would surpass me on many things but the power just wasn't there. Anyone else?

Yes, I had it in M mode, and was SMG.

Torque.. An FBO N54 can be close to 450tq but an E60 M5 is less than 400tq

Try to cross 120mph on M5 and compare with your 335.. you will know the difference..

I dare say a FBO 335i is a lot more fun to drive than the M5

Current Ride: Still picking one

The M5 has a race engine, so it needs to be driven at high rpms to generate power. Very different from a high torque TT engine that generates a ton of pulling power at low rpms. Also the M5 weighs over 4,000 lbs, so that's a double negative compared to a tuned 335.
North of 100 mph under full throttle they come into their element with the 7 speed gearing and 8k rpm redline.
I agree that as a daily driver it is a lot less polished and comfortable. Stiff and jarring, jerky, torque starved. I much prefer the ride quality and power delivery of my RBed 5 with coil overs.
