Default Chipmunk/ hamster wheel sound - 09-09-2018, 09:50 AM

I have been getting a strange sound from the front end.
It happens only when going forward and coming to a stop. doesn't do it in reverse. First I suspected the brakes because it is very obvious when I am braking, and going downhill it makes it even worse.
But, It STILL does it for a second or 2 after I'm completely stopped.
I took the car apart and spent ALL day today greasing everything in the front end, i even lubricated the rubber stripping around the radiator and intercooler and checking my brakes and used the brake lube on them, sanded around rotors, etc etc. The brakes are fine.
I had some friends stand next to the road while I did this over and over. Tried with hood up and they are saying that it sounds like its coming from the radiator/ intercooler/ condenser area or somewhere under the front.
I have no clue its embarrassing and frustrating.
Has anyone else had this? Suggestions?

Have you checked you serpentine belt tensioner/serpentine belt?

DON'T buy VRSF D.Ps or inlets! I have them and their fitment sucks! Running their FMIC with no issues.

its an auto.
It is, I'm assuming , making the noise when stopped now, but at a slower rate.
Sounds like something turning that needs to be oiled or something.
not squealing like a belt.
Could it be a pulley?
But why would it be worse and nlouder when coming to a stop?

It could be a few things, we’re all kinda just guessing and throwing darts blind tbh. A video clip with sound would help, or possibly take it to Indy of choice to diag.

Does anyone have a clue what this might be?
It is getting increasingly worse.
At idle sounds like a slowly turning tricycle wheel that needs oil.
But when braking it sounds like a rotor with a bad spot on it. BUT it is coming from the front of the engine. and worse going downhill.
I have no idea.

Gotta admit, thats a new one among the pantheon of BMW noises.

Put on max AC, noise from radiator fan or compressor?

How about if you pop into neutral, and come to a stop that way?

Any fluids like oil on the belts?

Long shots - bad pulley, vac leak, water pump, DSC unit, bird nest.

Can you get a video from the front with the hood open? Maybe have someone modulate the throttle whole you poke around with the phone?

Doesn't change with throttle, A/C on or off, And it doesn't change with varying fan speeds or whether its in neutral or drive.
I've already tried those things.
The only thing that makes any change is forward inertia when braking, or going downhill.
Braking makes it louder and faster. But idle it is just a slow rusty wheel sound.
It is NOT coming from the brakes. its from the front where the pulleys are.

To top it off my wipers just quit working out of the blue.
geez

How many miles on the car?

Does it sound like this at idle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkfjKiYlbv0

I'm leaning towards something on the belt system.

Actually, It sounds like the beginning stages of that sound. You might be on to something here!
So now how the heck do I single out which pulley? Its so intermittent that I kept trying to jump out of the car yesterday to catch the sound that I cant pinpoint it.
Theres also the other issue of the embarrassing squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak!!!! from the front of the car when I brake. Was thinking about turning my rotors and hoping for the best. Maybe a loose suspension component?

It seemed like the sound continued after you came to a stop so I doubt it is brakes.

If you are in the window for belt replacement it can't hurt to do it. While the belt is off, have them check each pulley and accessory and turn them by hand, check for play, noise, etc.

Most kits come with the tensioner and at least the idler pulley and aren't too expensive unless you go full OEM.

OK. The pulley and belt thing, I can understand.
But what I'm not understanding is that sound when I'm stopping.
I checked and greased the hell out of the drivers side.
I did notice that the 3 nuts on top of the shock beneath the strut bar have moved. You can see where the nuts were sitting, now theyre off a couple of millimeters. Also they were loose. I torqued them, but still squeak.

Could it be the anti lock brakes pulsing and squeaking somehow?

OK so I have done some extensive reading, as well as a trip to a couple of mechanics.
Have come to the conclusion that my problem is the PCV valve, or either front or rear seals.
There is excessive vacuum inside the engine. When you take the oil cap off while it is running , it is a strong vacuum holding pretty tight to the cap.

Apparently, the valve is integrated into the valve cover, and I have to change the entire cover to fix.

You can replace the PCV valve without removing the valve cover.
Replace it with the Rob Beck PCV valve if you're going to replace it.

This is ridiculous, as well embarrassing with my car squeaking like hell every time that I come to a stop. And NO ONE has a clue as to what is is, and I can barely find anyone else with the same problem?

Interesting that it is PCV.

Found a video, I guess it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NltRrcSMVq4

I don't know as much about the N55 system, but there seems to be a good thread on e90post called "PCV valve of doom". Seems to be a fixable issue.

I went around and around in circles in a parking lot today on lunch break.
And I could reproduce the chipmunk sound when going left, or either coming to a stop. Nothing turning right.
And I cannot pinpoint the sounds location.
I understand the PCV for the other sound, but what about the chipmunks in my engine bay???

What was the noise?

I have the same noise and I am suspecting the AC Pulley. I am swapping the clutchless AC Pulleywith bearing this weekend. It's only $45.

FOr me when I take the oil cap off, the noise stays.

Well, I spent $1000.00 to have a new valve cover installed.
The engine whine sound (almost) went away completely.
Whenever the jb4 is off, I dont have an issue.
( I heard a very faint whine once at a drive through since new valve cover)

However, when Jb4 is on, no matter what map, it makes embarrassing whine sounds. I don't know 100% if it is related to Jb4 but it only does it when Jb4 is turned on.
As for the chipmunk sound when braking... It is still as loud and embarrassing as ever.
Ive done lots of reading and my conclusion is that its the front main seal when braking, and the rear main seal when idling after running in Jb4.
I am going to have the seals replaced, yay credit card swipe.
If this doesnt work then Im going to trade this money pit for something NA.

If anyone else has suggestions before I spend a bunch on the seals then please chime in.
