Default N55 Diverter and throttle questions - 07-10-2014, 05:23 PM

I've been reading the specs on the N55 engine. So the diverter valve (BOV) is electric, and controlled by the DME. I would assume the purpose of the diverter is to keep the charge pipe (everything downstream of the turbo) from over pressuring. I would assume the DME would read boost pressure, and when it hit a certain limit, open the diverter. Other variables might come into play, such as if the clutch is depressed or the gas pedal is at 0% or the state of the automatic transmission. I ran across some discussions about holding the boost while shifting a manual, that it could be a problem re-spooling the turbo. Is this a problem only on the N54 or N55 or both? Not really my concern because I drive an AT. But my main question is how does the JB4 handle the diverter? Is the relief point programmable either by relief pressure or amount of time to hold the valve open? Is this even addressed at all? What happens if the diverter fails?

The N55 is Valvetronic. It does not need a throttle, yet it has one (found it when I installed my charge pipe). Literature says that this is in case the valvetronic fails. What is the action of the throttle butterfly? Does it completely open when the engine is running and close when the engine is off or valvetronic in a failed state? Does it modulate with the valvetronic (that would kinda defeat the purpose)?

Would anyone from BMS like to weigh in on this? Terry, Russell, Jason?

Wedge?

Similarly related but different, how does the JB4 act with the load tables for DCT shift points? Being that the load is read from the DME and the JB4 is 'tricking' the dme on load, will this have an affect down the road or once we (n55 + DCT) get above x hp/tq?

Several years later and still interested. Are there links to other topics where this is discussed? Using the search feature brought me here.

I ran across this aftermarket dirverter a while back. It discusses a little about how the diverter works on their web page. I don't remember if it was the original post or the web site, but I think they said that the stock dirverter completely dumps pressure when you let off the accelerator. This one keeps a couple PSI constantly. Also has higher capacity than stock. Haven't bought one yet, not the cost of the device, but scared of the trouble of doing it myself or paying someone to do it.

I might be making an assumption, however, most people that upgraded their turbos also did the GFB diverter valve upgrade. N55 people that is...

And some that didn't upgrade the turbo. I have one sitting here wait for installation.
