Default is the N54 really that bad as far as reliability goes? - 07-16-2021, 10:12 AM

Well I kind of want a 335 but don't want to get a 2011 plus as they all seem to be around 18-30k but I hear a lot of horror stories about the N54..is it stuff that you can do yourself and avoid the shop?https://9apps.ooo/

Its not a Honda as far as reliability goes, but most of the maintenance can be done yourself if you look around on the forums and on youtube.

If you have doubts, don't buy one.
If you do get one, remember they can be 40k+ MSRP when new. So expect to pay for repairs as such on a 40/50k car, not a 10k car.
Cars depreciate, the parts or labor for repair do NOT.

short answer is YES.

but it depends on what you compare it to. Compared to exotics like a lambo or Ferrari no the n54 is not unreliable

If your comparing the n54 to civics/accords/ corolla/ camery/ s2000/ g37 then yes the n54 is very unreliable

I have 130K miles on my 07 335i and still going strong. It still has the stock turbos and has been tuned since about 40K miles.

Mine is about to get a lot of new parts put on it because well it has 130K miles on it and I want to make some more power. I think this is where you start getting lots of reliability issues. With the prices that they are going for now days you have people grabbing them for cheap and immediately throwing cheap turbos on it and boosting it to the moon and then crying that their car is an unreliable piece of crap.

There is a difference between being frugal and cheap and the frugal choice isn't always the cheapest option. Clearly understand your goals and budget and then evaluate if it is the right platform to you.

Cheap, Fast, Good. You only get to pick two.
