Unhappy Went to upgrade my ECU using MHD, failed at beginning. Can someone verify my next ste - 04-19-2017, 09:11 AM

So last night I went to flash the BMS JB4 backend using MHD on my Nexus 6P and I either had a voltage drop or the K+DCAN cable I was using sucked. If I tried to flash it back to stock I usually got an error stating it "Could not erase DME" although sometimes it would get past that and then I would get a failure at paket 1-4.

Either way my ECU is stuck in recovery mode and I had to drive the wife's car to work today. Most of the time it would just fail after connecting but occasionally it would flash 2-4 packets before failing. Then I would need to replace the cable to get to connect again.

I ordered a 25AMP Stanely Battery Charge to replace the ****ty battery charger I had and a new BimmerSoftware K+DCAN Cable.

My actual question, it appears that I just need to get the 25 Amp charger connected, let the batteries charge up a bit, keep the battery charger connected and try my new BimmerSoftware K+DCAN and flash back to stock and then flash JB4 backend.

Am I missing any steps to undo this ****up?

Any chance I destroyed my DME?

You should be good after charging the battery. I had the same issue with a charger installed( old battery ). I purchased a new battery the same day and was able to flash back to stock the first try.

Alright, I ordered a much better charger and better cable, so hopefully between those two it should help.

Also may want to disconnect your batter for a few minutes, reconnect, and then charge it a bit before trying to flash the DME again.

Alright, the first thing I will do tomorrow when I get my battery charger is let it run overnight.

Triple checked that before I started. After getting past the initial anxiety of last night, I am pretty confident this is a combination of bad OTG cable, bad DCAN, or low power. I am working to correct all three.

Anyone in Michigan interested in help me fix this Friday?

Keep the charger on while flashing, and make sure all accessories are off prior to flashing.

Personally, I'd purchase a new battery, sounds like yours is tired.

Dave, I am an ijjit and just bought this battery less than 4 months ago. What is the best way to test if the battery is good?

I just got this battery charger and I hope it fixes it.

I got a really nice charger and hopefully this corrects it. Good buddy is coming by with a multimeter tonight so I will be testing the battery and if it doesn't work, I will exchange it at Autozone under warranty.

Thank's for the offer! Good luck on your hunt.

Cable came in today and after installing the new DCAN cable it worked the first try. Shame on me for trying to save $10, lesson learned.

Anyway, guess it is time to keep on upgrading!

How was the hunt?

I had similar issues with a cheap cable. Good to hear you got it fixed. With the 25A charger though you might want to remove the fuel pump 20A fuse when flashing, your charger should have no issues with keeping up the juice.

Hunt was good but didn't get a bird. They were not responding much to calls.

After your story here I think I might opt for a better cable before flashing.
Also, I didn't think to remove the fuse for the fuel pump, but that makes sense to do. I will unplug my head lights so the angle eyes are not draining.

I would recommend just getting a good battery charger (At least 25 amps) and a BimmerSoftware DCAN cable. It worked the first time I plugged it in. I didn't pull any fuses.

I have a pretty good charger.
I tried flashing using a Galaxy S3 and it keep disconnecting the USB so I used
my girlfriends Galaxy S7 and flashed Stage 1 MHD no problem.

I did disconnect my Headlights and pulled this fuse for the fuel pump.

Interesting, it seems the DCAN cables are extremely sensitive to basically anything.

Glad you got everything taken care of pretty easily.

I feel a pretty good boost in power but that is by the butt dyno.
Bunch of us are putting together a Dyno Day near Flint pretty soon.
Looks like it's about $60 for three pulls.

Let me know if you are interested and we'll put you down. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1125178

Not quite ready for that yet. My long term goal is to have between 450-550WHP that I can daily for at least 6 years. My real goal is to get this motor to 200,000 miles, is why I don't want to run meth or E85.

I don't want my car to be uncomfortable and since this is a convertible it isn't going to be a track monster, I want something I can put 25-30k miles on a year, traveling with the wife reliably. This means I don't plan on lowering it much or putting too stiff of a suspension in, I really want to build a "Mini GT" car.

I haven't seen any threads about super high mileage modded N54 motors, so that has me worried.

So far I only have an oil catch can and the JB4. I am doing the 1 step cooler NGK 5992 plugs and new coils this weekend.

Long term here is my build I am working on.
  • JB4 + BMS Pump Flash
  • BMS Oil Catch Can
  • Berk Catback Street Exhaust + Berk ******* **
  • CPE 135i Intercooler + Oil Cooler
  • Ground Control Street Camber Plates
  • Apex Arc 8 with 18/255/35 PS4S fronts and 18/275/35 PS4S rears
  • M3 Front Sway Bar
  • M3 Front Upper+Lower Control Arm Upgrade
  • E82 128i/135i Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit Sport Suspension Package
  • MFactory Helical Limited Slip Differential
  • Vargas Performance N54 Stage 2 Hybrid (For when the stock turbo's kick it)
  • Fuel-it! E-Series 135i and 335i Stage 2 LPFP Upgrade

This is my first time modding any car, so I would love people to look over this build and critique it for my stated uses.

Everything looks great to me. I don't know much about the N54's yet but looks like a pretty good build. Keep in mind that for a daily driver that suspension might not be very fun on the Roads around us if it's to stiff.
