Question Ghost Cams MHD - 01-09-2017, 09:44 AM

Will there be this for the N55? I know the N54 has and I was curious. Have only had MHD and JB4 for a small amount of time.

light your car on fire, it's a better mod.

Enjoying the new tables discovered and the XDF progress made? if you'd like. Every bit is appreciated!

Just go into tuner pro and change the vanos values at idle to more overlap. Can have the lumpiest idle then.

This is the first I've heard of this so I looked up a bunch of videos on YouTube. If we're going purely on noise from tuning tricks, this is a heck of a lot cooler than the PPK pops and bangs everyone seems to have a hard on for.

****ing up your afr at idle to sound like a massive vacuum leak sounds good? Ok...

Do I think it sounds better than a backfiring old truck with a rusted off muffler, yes.

THANKFULLY, this would be very difficult to do on the N55 because it uses valvetronic so duration and lift is very low at idle.

The ghost cam adjustment in the tune is designed and sounds just like a muscle car with a big cam in it. I don't know if you have ever heard it, but it certainly doesn't sound like a vacuum leak and doesn't mess up the AFR.

Not everyone likes the sound, and to each their own, but if you know the sound that it mimics from a high performance big cam in a muscle car, it is very close to the same sound.

Except that:
1) It isn't a muscle car.
2) The sound is not the result of an aggressive cam change.

So essentially it's for posers and should be mocked accordingly.

I feel it's no different than PPK. There's no performance reason to have the pops and bangs. It's just for show.

Like I said, to each their own. I personally wont have it in my car.

I have a 14 GT500 with big cams in it, so I dont need my daily driver to sound like the GT500 'should' sound.

I know all the hate lol. Does the DIY for ghost cams work for the N55 or is it just N54? I assume it would work because I don't think Vanos changed between the engines. Anyone have any insight on this?

N55 vanos range is different than N54. Just set intake and exhaust vanos to the lowest number at 20-25 load. Should give the lumpiest idle.

I am still getting used to the whole tuning with TunerPro. The DIY shows to change the top bar of 13.5 to 40.0 all to 100 and similar for the exhaust idle warm up at 101.6 Should these be 20-25 or am I getting this backwards?

I have no interest in trying this, but know people will try. I don't know what vanos tables do what, since there are so many. But I would look into the vanos IN and EX warm idle and idle 2 tables. Decrease all values by 15 to start. The lower you go, the more valve overlap, the lumpier the idle.

My GT500 could not be driven daily with the drag radials and 778 whp. And my Porsche is worth too much money to be driven more then a few hundred miles a year (1997 993 Twin turbo 28K miles)

Besides, my 340xi is leased, not a limited production car that will be worth more money in the future, and I use it every day pretty much, I have a company car too as well so I get to use a variety of different cars (I run a Maserati/Alfa Romeo dealer, and we have a good amount of used exotic cars that I slap a plate on and drive on the weekends when the weather is nice). The GT500 would be too loud, too much exhaust fumes, to sketchy in the rain and bad weather and definitely not as comfortable as the BMW or whatever car I have from work.

From what I understand yes, but only if you have the N54. N55 doesn't have that feature yet. I wish it did.

You raise a really good point - Why don't we mock people who use the MHD exhaust burble for the same reason?

Given that:
1) It isn't a muscle car.
2) The fuel over-run is not the result of an aggressive tune or cam change.

It seems to me running ghost cams should be mocked LESS than the exhaust burble - at least you're not risking excessive exhaust gas temps or cylinder wash with ghost cams.

Anything over about 0.2 sec of burble is for posers yes.

EDIT. But I suppose everything is, exhaust, paint, wheels...
