Default Alternator white out - 06-10-2019, 04:41 PM

Comrades,

It's been a while since I was active here as I stopped modding and had no new info to share. It's been maintenance ever since. Lots of it.
A few days ago as I pulled out of my driveway the dash lit up with every conceivable error. Including transmission going into 2nd gear, iDrive blacked out, ABS, airbag, ARS, you name it. Like 4th of July fireworks.
I pulled 52 errors with ISTA-D, then reluctantly took it to Stealer for diagnostics. They found what I did, but also that the alternator was putting out 18 volts. Hello! I swapped it out and all the drive error codes disappeared, but the iDrive screen is still black, odometer displays in km instead of miles, I get the SOS phone yellow warning light plus the following DME codes:

2BA2 DME: Terminal 15 deactivation, activation (for several months now)
2C40 DME: Oxygen sensor 2 before catalytic converter
Signal lines
2C9D DME: Oxygen sensor heater2 before catalytic converter: Activation

I suspect the regulator inside the alternator failed and caused all the drive systems errors. But the rest is a mystery. I did buy a new OEM battery two weeks ago just prior to the described failure, and registered it. I was having battery issues where they drained overnight. To the point that I had to use a mechanical key to open the doors. Battery is now charged to 100% and alternator brand new. Will see if it holds up overnight or if I have a huge leak. I had it tested and it seems ok.
Appreciate input.

The overvoltage condition will cause all sorts of electrical warnings and problems but the rate of charge is controlled by the DME. And when pulling codes, you should have one for overcharge. Was there one?

With the age of your car I suggest checking the chassis to engine ground. Use an ohm meter to check resistance between engine and chassis. Should be nearly zero.

Do you know where the ground wire is located?

If you take off the left front wheel you might be able to see it on the engine mounting bracket. I found it easier to add a ground cable from the alt. mounting to the chassis.

Thanks. I also have to replace a precat O2 sensor, so will have car on the lift.

Re the iDrive I upgraded to CIC, so the car has been programmed to think it is a 09/2009 build date so it accepts the later model unit. Wonder if the electrical issues caused it to reset to factory date and settings. I tried rebooting by pressing the volume knob and I can hear he relay clicking after 15 secs, also CD spinning. So seems the unit works, just not communicating with the car.
