Default s63tu Pure Stage 2 Turbos - Installed!! - 05-05-2016, 09:09 PM

Short update on the project. Jesse and team down at Pure installed the first set of Pure Stage 2's on my car. We did some initial logs and things are looking good. I will leave it to Pure to share more detailed pictures and any specific information on the turbos but here are some of my initial observations:

1. No impact to spool RPM - it is like stock or better!
2. No boost drop whatsoever to redline - I haven't pushed it that hard yet but it's like the Energizer Bunny... keeps going and going
3. It's a bit throatier - now that the turbine wheel is significantly upgraded vs the Stg1 which uses the stock turbine wheel
4. Normal drive-ability is unchanged. I puttered up from Oceanside on Map 2, 4 and a low additive Map 8... all good
5. No traction.... lol
6. The turbo just plain looks amazing - build quality, fit/finish and the size of those wheels!!!!

Working on a few other supporting changes and should have dyno results next week. Stay tuned!

Big thanks to Jesse, Chuck and the crew for accommodating my crazy travel schedule this week.

Great news, hopefully these stage two turbos have shifted the torque up the RPM range, maintians boost and power to the red line plus shows beter efficiency through EGT, IAT and fuel ecconomy

Nice what boost levels and meth additive# were you running on stage 1 turbos and what settings are you aiming for with stage 2?

Do you need to make any BPM tuning changes for this?

I was running a custom Map 6 anytime I was going for the kill

Don't anticipate any flash changes - lets see.

Please share the custom map 6 details for us rookies ....dont worry I am not looking to break your records just want to go fast

I thought map 8 is best when using meth and not 6?

You mentioned that with stage1 turbos we can probably hit 25psi above 5krpm

What were the limits and issues with stage 1 and what is stage 2 improving?

There is no recipe - depends on weather, gas, other mods, meth volume, drag vs. half-mile vs. dyno... all sorts of things affecting the power band.

Allmotor, did you or Pure note any wear in the waste gate shafts where they pass through the hot side housing?

Maybe Pure can answer once they dismantle the Stg1's. I certainly had rattle on that set. You can feel some play on the wastegate bypass flange. The Stg2 are on brand new OEM housings so let me listen to the rattle as I really didn't pay attention the other day.

FWIW I was at supercar sunday last week. I hear a car turn on and I hear the infamous wastegate rattle. Im very keen with that sound. Im looking around for an n54 or something along those lines. Well it was actually a brand new porshe turbo S just idling and has that clicking rattle from the rear where the turbos are. It looks like its a very common issue with all platforms. Its not a sigh of wear and tear, its just the nature of a C clip and a pin just jiggling lol.

Late model turbo cars mostly use vacuum based actuators rather than the standard pressure based actuators. So the wastegates can hang open rattling in default, no vacuum position. Pressure based is spring loaded tight to the seat in default. So vacuum based systems elaborate any mechanical clearance noises. I think a vacuum based system would have a little sharper boost control and also defaults to low or no boost in the case of a vacuum leak. In the event of a boost line leak, pressure based actuators can result in overboost and motor damage depending on how the boost control system is setup. So even though vacuum based can cause an annoying rattle, I think it's still superior for more important reasons.

Thanks Pure, guess its a case of suck it up then. I was hoping it was a bush replacement, adjustment on preload or something like that.

Just got back home and started the car - don't hear rattle on this set. Maybe it will happen with some miles under it.
