Default Advice on first performance mods - 08-16-2020, 05:18 PM

I just picked up a 2009 135i with 43,000 miles. This is my first turbo car so a lot of this is new to me. (*********, BOV, E85, etc. )

After reading through 90 pages on this this forum, I know enough to be dangerous but don't know much in depth. Or first hand.

My plan is to replace the spark plugs and coil packs. Then get a JB4, a DCI and see how that goes. Then try some E85 on map 5.

I don't want it to be loud. I can't tell the sound difference from clips of ******* vs catted down ***** so I am undecided on whether to install the *******. I will have get it inspected (PA car) first and decide after the first round of mods.

Did I miss anything important?

Toss the plastic charge pipe. It will fail.

No matter how fast I go there's always someone slower in front of me.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him Jet Ski.

Basics I've learned with 3 years of ownership and FBO:

- Maintenance before mods. Mods will exacerbate existing problems. Get the
car running great then mod. Expect problems once modded (misfire, various
codes etc). The forum can help you sort it all out with proper logging.

- Power/results for dollars spent in order (my opinion):
  • Tune - most here end up with a JB4 + Flash/ecu tune specific for their set
up. Some are happy with flash/ecu only tunes, I prefer both
  • Fuel (octane/ethanol), ethanol is easy and if you add an ethanol tune=Wow!
  • Everthing else to support/push the tune and fuel (charge pipe, BOV, exhaust, fuel pumps, meth, and on and on)

C atless ******** and exhaust will make the biggest difference with a tune

JB4 flash with JB4, 4.0 bar sensor, DocR 6870, Race InterC, FuelIT stage 3 (525), Helix OverDrv 3x, Phoenix Intake with PI (750cc) with BMS controller, PrRW coil pack kit, WaveTrc Diff. E85

My opinion differs, but it is based solely on my own experience. (pushing 24 PSI on stock exhaust, including before and after Logs and Dragy results)

I did my DeePees and Inlets after all my current mods.
In terms of raw power gains, maybe .2 seconds to 60mph.
Better WGDC will happen, which should help with turbo longevity, reduce heat, etc.
I definitely like the new 'note' of my exhaust post DeePees. That was worth it alone.

dmckmc summed it up in my mind.

Car Healthy
DCI
7.5" FMIC (unless WMI for cooling)
Charge Pipe
BOV
Inlets and DeePees for longevity

Fueling may be required depending on how much power you target.
Custom BEF can be after the above and will want fueling to match.
