Default N54 single turbo - 12-05-2013, 07:42 PM

Ever since I bought my 335i I have felt the need to make it go faster. First it was a simple tune a jb3 which I ended up upgrading to the jb4, then the jb4 iso, and then jb4 g5 iso. At the same time I went from tune only to meth and then onto my pursuit of using E85 with a FBO car. For a long time I considered RB turbos and even though they are a great product I decided I was ok sacrificing response in the name of more power. So I started looking into single turbos. I knew exactly what I wanted, and that was a 6466 top mount twin scroll. I wanted the 6466 for relatively good spool (combined with the twin scroll) and also because it produces very good numbers compared to turbos in its same size category. Looking at other platforms it seems to be the right choice for the power I wanted to make which is 600whp on pump and once the HPFP issues are solved around 750+whp on E85 depending on how the motor ends up responding to that power. I knew what I wanted and all I needed now was to see how I was going to get there. Just so happens a friend of mine is a fabricator and owns his own shop caller KSR Performance and Fabrication. https://www.facebook.com/KSRPerformanceFabrication He build all kinds of awesome stuff on a day to day basis and his work is amazing. When I told him about the project he jumped right on board and this is the outcome. The project is coming together nicely and I just wanted to share some pictures of the progress. It will be another month before its done. The ********, turbo to intercooler pipe, 4" exhaust, and trans swap all have to be done still but i just wanted to share progress.

dropping the car off

got the parts in

more parts

pulling her apart

some room in there

awww yeah thatll fit

flange and some runners

some preliminary calculations

that moment when an auto just wont do it

needs a clutch right? clutch masters twin disc fx 850

wow these things are small

this isnt...

starting the manifold

oh hello there

mounted needs a filter...

thats better I am going to make a better intake eventually...

all done top mount twin scroll single 44mm mvr tial wastegate

O2 sensor j style bungs may switch to standard heat syncs depending on how well these work or dont

ill have to get a better picture but the wastegate is fed by one pipe that has been plasma cut in half and a divider has been welded into place to keep the exhaust gasses completely separated all the way up to a clearance of 1/16 of an inch to the wastegate valve

Thats all folks. I will update when I have updates...

Looks good man, a little different than FFtec's kit. Is that not stainless steel? Do you plan on coating it?

Ok, just not polished I guess, coating would pretty much be a waste on SS. It really looks like mild steel, must just be the pictures.

Looks like it's coming together quite nicely. If you don't mind me asking, what is the trans swap costing you? I'm doing a large single turbo build as well, and am looking at swapping my 6AT as an option

Looking good. How much clearance do you have between the hot side and the shock tower?

It looks like a small area was notched out to make room. I guess that is that concession you have to make to have the turbo placement further back from the headlight.

That is a cool project. No 6AT solutions which fell in a similar price range I take it? Or did you really just want MT?

it wasnt notched but it is very tight i wanted the turbo to sit as far back as possible to allow for the filter

It's not that at 6466 is so huge vs. the stocker is just so tiny! It is a good sized turbo, but it is no 88mm. The 6466 is quite popular with the bigger EVO builds on a 2.0 4 cyl.

Can't wait to see log and dyno of how it boosts with that. I'm deciding what AR to do...
