Default N55 forged pistons....yes or no ? - 05-01-2018, 01:11 PM

Im rebuilding my engine since i spun a bearing

Thoughts on JE forged pistons for cold climate ? Should i keep them oem and coat them to avoid slapping ?

I heard they slap in cold weather and can mess up cylinder walls....

Curious, what boost pressure or horsepower were you running and how many miles were on the vehicle when you spun the bearing?

Piston slap in cold weather, especially freezing temperatures is never really an ideal scenario for forged pistons.

He was at about 95,000 - 100,000 miles. He JUST installed the Pure stage 2. He got about 9 pulls in before it spun. The last log we did was 18 psi on the MHD BEF timing targets.

This was the final pull.

On my built motor Subaru's when I cold started in colder months I would get slight piston slap, to ensure longevity just ensure the car fully warms up before driving. The slapping is because they cannot get stock piston rings to wall tolerance because the forged internals expand and contract more than stock.

Do a stroker with compression ratio lowered if possible Otherwise, factory piston is ok with PS2.

Thank you for the info
Would you still get forged pistons for a maxed out ps2 ? Or its not worth it ?

Forged pistons have thicker rings but you are right stock ones are prolly fine ! Im wondering whats the life span of a piston tho....they have 100k miles

For a naxed ps2 I wouldn't get forged internals, I don't think it's necessary so I'd wait till it blows before proceeding to forged internals. Maybe past the 600whp I'd go for forged internals.

I heard from engine builders that forged motors are done after 100,000km as the constant wear and tear from cold starts cause cylinder wall issues and the gap increases between the wall and piston so you start to burn alot of oil.

But he did "blow" the engine and is having it rebuilt. I said to pick a goal and build for that goal. Builds that continue to progress with no end goal are the most expensive.

Oh I didnt know that, my apologies.

Well if it was up to me I'd do a full build, but with a twist, light weight internals to get more response like a mines GTR build.

But if you want to do something cheap, I'd say forged rods and pistons or just a used n55 motor from ebay or something. I'd chose a used n55 replacement or OEM parts if you want longevity.

Stock pistons if you don't intend to sleeve it. Otherwise, forged pistons with iron sleeves. Might think about WPC treating them for lubricity and then coating the tops for thermal management and longevity.

What kind of damage have we seen on stock N55 pistons so far? Rods and bearings seem the week spot so far?
