All of our problems seem like nothing whenever we see things like this!
I am no longer upset of my waste gate rattle and shaft play.

Glad it happened at low speed and you weren't hurt! Cars are easier to fix than people. Hope you get it back to 100%.

For some reason, I am already thinking that there was a cylinder cut and went hyper lean detonation. I guess there may be an assumption that the tbi was going, and the injector wasn't
Yea, hard to say, I have no experience with engine failures like this. All my injectors were low mileage (like 3,000 miles) and never showed the typical signs of struggle, rough idle etc.

Sorry man, I can relate. Wastegate line blew off on the dyno, let my 6262 go into freespin, next thing we know it probably hit 50psi and now I have low compression on #1 and #6. **** happens! Just have to build it better next time...
Cylinder 3 is the culprit for all the carnage, and am impressive amount of carnage it is.

Electronic problems can be equally as frustrating.

Yea, at least the motor blew in an entertaining fashion. For my first blown motor I think I did a pretty good job!

Yea, I can grab the forward 1/2 of the oil pan and wiggle it up and down, it almost blew completely off!

lol, I actually pressed the "blow motor now, in dramatic fashion" button by accident.

That is the craziest engine failure I've seen on an N54 in 8 years. Thanks for sharing but sorry for the crazy bad luck and I'm glad your ok. I wonder if your engine blew from a failure in the PI system and hyper lean condition causing detonation. I run PI and always am scared that if PI fails there is no failsafe currently in any tuning solution to switch the tune and protect then engine like if an injector clogged or failed electrically etc.

Not an expert but most failures have been ringlands failing/bent rods e.t.c but looking at your pics and comparing them to pics suggest cyl 3 had way much fuel in it.https://goo.gl/photos/Qfjb9FGxhVPE9As88. Regardless very sorry on this catastrophic accident.

Definitely takes the cake as far as morbidly fascinating engine failures lol. You were logging at the time correct? Post a handful of the logs and a screenshot of your JB4 settings. Might contain a clue as to what happened.

Evan
Why does everyone say hydrolock?

It's hard to tell but it looks like u ripped the wrist pin out of the bottom of the piston..a better picture up towards piston will tell...

I build engines all day long and figuring out why they broke in the first place is one of the perks of the job...as long as it isn't my engine or fault... gl with moving forward and get me some more pics..

Exactly the same thing that happened to our flood recovery motor. Just salvage what you can, and get another used motor. The N54's are not as tough as people think, we are breaking them quite frequently these days.

That is quiet a statement, do we at least know what happened ? In both cases.

I know exactly what happened to our motor, we bought a flood recovery they said was good for a core only, we ran it, it made 700WHP, and developed a small tapping sound. Rod let go exactly the same way as this motor did. The pictures actually almost look indentical. They are posted on bimmer boost. The guy below quoting for idiocy. The only idiot is the person who has never done any testing, never broken anything. Thinking he knows anything about the limits of the N54. The Down syndrome displayed by the people joining this platform is so damn real. Thank god, we are slowly moving away from the N54, and working on platforms where it's not a bunch of kids.

Let me know when you have tested even one N54 to failure, let alone more than a half dozen. The butt hurt with how we push things forward, and laugh at the stragglers is so real. Is Vargas the only performance shop going through N54s or does everyone?

Well, okay. What platform are you moving to ? S55 ?
Another question, and please don't take it the wrong way. But why do you always sound like you have something stuck up your ass ? Chill man seriously...
