Default How reliable is the n55 engine? - 03-27-2021, 01:29 AM

A 2012 335i sedan popped up at my local dealer and it's only $22k CAD, but it has 116k kms (72k miles). I'm very tempted to go take a look but if there are lots of issues that are known and are very costly fixes, I'm not going to waste my time.

Can any owners share the pros and cons of the car? Would be awesome in helping me gauge whether it's worth it or not!Tweakbox Appvalley https://vlc.onl

72k miles is nothing. I’ve seen them with 180-190k miles running fine. I’d be prepared to replace the turbo at 100k, but if it’s working okay, you may not need to. Otherwise, as long as it has the options you want, go for it. Definitely work on the price though. I can get a 2012 F30 with 72k miles for under US$10k. Don’t pay double that.

Here’s what my 2012 135i has needed replacing so far:

Water pump
Thermostat
Starter
Oil filter head gasket
Oil pan gasket
Valve cover
Plugs
Coils
4 injectors
Boost solenoid
Eccentric shaft and valvetronic motor

My car as 115,000 miles currently.

I did all of the above myself. If it weren’t for that I’d probably be looking at close to $10k in maintenance expenses. I’m big on preventative maintenance and “while you’re in there” work but all of the above were necessary due to parts failure.

This car is already my most maintenance intensive vehicle ever. I’ve had 12 cars, 5 of them were M3s which were bulletproof.

Don’t get me wrong. I love this car and the way handles and the easy power available but it hasn’t been easy to own.

2012 135i Mods: air scoops, CP, K&N filter, PS1, ADE FMIC, BMW PE, JB4, 1M front body, full M3 suspension front and rear, M3 brakes front and rear, M3 rear subframe and LSD

Owned so far: 88 M3 x 2, 95 325is, 95 M3 x 2, 06 Mini Cooper S, 08 335 xi, 09 Z4 35i, 01 M3, 12 135i

A lot of that is routine maintenance for BMWs though. Plugs every 30k, coils at least every 50k. Water pump and T-Stat at 60k. Usually walnut blasting at the same time.

These cars are never gonna be cheap to keep. Nothing good ever is.

I wouldn’t call any items on my list “routine” for the average vehicle. Especially a water pump before 50k miles. I think the better term for these items is “expected “, unfortunately.
