Default Shredding belts? - 09-05-2018, 04:04 PM

I just finished putting in a new belt and tensioner on my n54 while I was in there I checked all the pulleys, pulled my main crank pulley, and cleaned out debris behind it, put everything back together and started the car, sounded great for about 2 mins before the belt started shredding again, I immediately turned off my engine and now I donít know whatís causing it. Any ideas of what to check? Iím pretty upset because this car has been out of commission for 2 weeks now. Thanks

Check the clutch type pulley on the alternator and the PS pulley for any cracks or missing spots, double check your belt routine too.

Ive inspected the pulleys and they all look fine, but would a small crack really shred my belts that quickly? im talking about less than 5 minutes here. if so, ill pull it all out and check again but i cant believe that a small crack in a pulley would ruin a brand new belt

Yes it would if it's throwing the balance. Did you check if the alternator pulley isn't seized?

the pulley seems fine, while i was replacing the belt, I noticed my AC pulley was BEYOND loose, i could unscrew the bolts with my bare hands no problem, so i snugged those up and threw the belt on. I have no clue what could be causing them to shred but i will double check

Make sure you check the alternator one.. it's a clutch type and it caused me a lot of headache.. no shop could figure out my belt shredding problem.

A big chunk of my plastic Power Steering pulley facing the engine was missing - I could not see it until I replaced it.

I dealt with this headache for too long as well.

You need to drop your oil pan and remove all the belt pieces from the pan and the oil pickup tube now.

From what I’m getting from everyone, I should just replace all my pulleys, drop the oil pan, pull the main seal and hope for the best? That just seems like a sh!tload if work for a 2 minute problem, not to mention $$$ but I will be taking it apart today so we’ll see how this goes

Update:I was inspecting the pulleys and the alternator pulley is cracked/chipped in more than 1 place as well as the power steering pulley, do you guys think this is what would be causing it?
