Spark plug guide -
05-04-2016, 06:33 PM
This has been a long needed update.
So after many years of owning high power N54’s I’ve had my fair share of ignition problems and have tested many parts. This thread is more to inform people what is actually out there and the options that can be had.
After all it really only boils down to 3 choices so pick one that suits your needs.
Spark plugs:
NGK 95770 (ILZKBR7B8DG) formally 5992’s
1 Step colder than stock. Recommended for any FBO +.
http://www.sparkplugs.com/product.aspx?zpid=39947
$13-14/ea
Autolite XP 5682
1.5ish colder than stock. By the information I received on them when compared to NGK. Recommended for FBO+
I ran these for a few thousand miles both with E40+meth and full E85. It performed much better than expected and better yet they are cheap. For the price they seem to be well worth it. They are dual tip dual material Iridiums and platinum. I’d expect them to last the 20-30K miles you usually get out of the 5992’s
http://www.sparkplugs.com/product.aspx?zpid=29181
$6-7/ea
NGK 93026 (DILKAR8A8)
2 steps colder than stock. 1 step colder than 5992’s. Recommended for 700hp+
These are the stock plugs in the GTR R35+.The GTR guys are running them in the 1000AWHP-sub range with E85. I have been running these for a pretty long time with full E85 and they have been great. They seem to be a little more crisp with response and slightly better starting than the other options. Last time I had them out they were still very clean telling me they aren’t to cold even for full E85.
Now with GTR plugs comes a whole other world of aftermarket parts we are deprived of. HKS has a plug, NGK has a $100+ race plug etc If anyone wants to try any of the other options, then go for it and let me know, ill update this thread.
http://www.sparkplugs.com/product.aspx?zpid=9718
$17+/ea. The price of these have really came down.
NGK 97506 (SILZKBR8D8S) S55/N63TU/N20?
2 Colder than stock.
Should be a good fit for us but currently untested. Someone try them out and let us know!
Now lets talk gapping.
I see a lot of people running into ignition issues swearing they gapped the plugs correctly. Wire and the round disks you get from AZ or advanced are all junk. I use either “feeler gauges” or a razor blade that I used a micrometer with to verify thickness. There should be a slight resistance as you insert the feeler gauge between the electrode and ground. If it goes in really easy or its tough to get in then its not gapped correctly. Take your time and do it right the first time.
Recommended gaps are
0.022”…….0-25psi (pump to E50 with meth)
0.018”…….25+psi (pump to E50 with meth)
0.018”…….20+psi (E85)
That’s been my experience with fresh coils. Others may have better or worst luck.

Have you tried the DILKAR8A8 plugs? I wonder if it would clear up any of Payams timing/melting plugs. The dual tip is good for spark concentration too.

We had it years ago. I think we've sold over 5000 by now lol. It works really awesome with the magnet too. Everyone should have one.
On the plugs I have not at least not that I recall. I had a phase where I tried 4-5 different ones (NGK, Brisk, etc) and eventually decided NGK 5992 worked the best at least for my needs at the time. Now with the OEM N20 & S55 plugs out I may give those a whirl once Bosch releases the part number for non-OEM sale.

I'm running Pure stage 2 with PI E85. I run 26psi (640ish whp) and use 5992 gapped to .022. I'll try them at .018. I'm not 700+ but is it worth trying the 93026 gapped to .018?

I believe it's Bosch ZR5TPP33. Apparently the "ZMR" in the part number for the BMW OEM spark plugs is just for "M" printing on the plug and "ZR" are an identical plug.
Edit: S55 use those Bosch plugs. N20 use NGKs.

The S55 plugs don't have generic P/N's yet so its tough to say whether they are just overpriced 5992 equivalents or if they net any potential gain spec wise. They are quite expensive and for the money something like the DILKAR8A8 seems to be a better deal having dual tip iridium over what looks to be platinum on the S55

I'd be interested in how NGK SILZKBR8D8S (97506) go. They're OEM on N20 and Alpina B7. I find it interesting that Alpina chose to use these different spark plugs to the Bosch ones used in all other N63N engines.

+1 one for the BMS tool - works great. Also, if you need to compare heat ranges the guide below may help.

Thanks of the write up! I went with NGK 95770 gapped to .019 (per Wedge) about a month ago; used the same feeler gauge. I've noticed a rough idle upon start. I'm assuming its more fuel system related, but any thoughts/ideas if it could be the gap? I'm on e60, no meth, 21psi max, no misfires.

I know a rule of thumb on spark plugs is usually every 100hp or so over stock, it is recommended to run a colder plug, but how do some people (myself included) able to run the oem plug and mid 500s?I have tried the ngk plug, gapped at 0.022, didn't have issues, just replaced them as they had 10k on them

I have the same question as above. What is a better plug for a 400WHP car? (+130hp over stock). The 5992 or the stock Bosch? I love NGK plugs, just wasn't sure if I was making enough HP to go 1 step colder on this motor.

The biggest change for me was the life of the plugs... The NGKs last double, if not triple, the amount of time as the oem plugs. When I used oem plugs I literally had to replacement every 10K miles as stated, so cost wise going NGKs helped.

I did notice more cold start roughness, but after I purchased a torque wrench and torqued them down to spec, all that went away.

The idea is to get away with the largest gap possible before you get blow out. If you dont mind pulling plugs and gaping them a few times to see what works best then start with 0.022" and go smaller as necessary. I also wouldnt gap individual cylinders if only a few are blowing out.
