Default Castrol ATF - will this work ? - 05-26-2013, 07:47 AM

The product specifies our transmission name - Can I use this ? I have 45k miles, I wont drop the pan, just drain and fill, I'll do the complete flush at 75k or so.. Can I use this for now ?

That's interesting...

I don't know but I used Motorcraft Mercon SP for my total fill. No problems.

You'll get about 6 when ya drop the pan. The only way to remove it all is to pull the tranny and drain the t.c....no one ever does so just replace what you drain and do it again like you said when you drop the pan and u should be golden. Btw make sure your mectronics sleeve isn't leaking. And I used pentosin atf1 in mine both flushes I did. Works great

I was able to get 6.5 Qrts out and put back in 6.25
the prob with mine was it was flowing out at 5 Qrts, I forgot to start the car to fill in at 30 - 50 C .. when I did that it took 1.25 more ... the fluid that came out is black as hell ... the new mix looks reddish brown, will do again at 75k with pan, total cost of drain/ fill under 60 bucks!

(Castrol at walmart is $5.58 x 7 :: Siphon pump = $11)

Test Drive showed improved mpg, the shifts were smoother but little delayed maybe coz the car was not at operating temperature yet

Question: How do I reset my tranny ECU ?

Default Try RL, you'll like it - 05-27-2013, 10:35 PM

I would suggest you try RL D4 ATF. Cheap insurance. Every car I've put this in it has really made a difference. Disregard RL's site about using this fluid in the power steering....wrong, you must use Pentosin CHF 11S for that. Anyway, great product, for me anyway. Filling the tranny properly requires bringing it up to a certain temperature and shifting it up through the gears. Search for that on e90post or another forum. I just made sure I replaced exactly what I removed. I'd remove the pan every 30K miles. My .02 cents for cars with tunes which are effectively running under "severe service" conditions.

I would run the lifeguard until you are out of warranty, then use redline ATF afterwards.

I too have been wondering about using the Castrol ATF. In my transmission it is recommended to only use the Shell 1375.4 fuild but at the absurd price for it im not really willing to do that. I'd love to hear some more feedback from everyone on this.

I run the pensosin. Atf1 because its slightly thicker at temp. Everything else is close to lg6. My tranny shifts great under loads. But when its cool its a little slow.

For piece of mind its still worth using Lifeguard 6. 6qts + a new pan can be found on CTSC for $230 ex del which makes almost a no-brainer. They also just sell it the oil alone for $19/qt.

Unfortunately here Down Under its approximately $60/L so its tempting to try an alternative. The closest alternatives are Redline D6 and Amsoil ATL. They are low viscosity ATFs like the LG6 and thus should not have any cold shifting issues. However, I'm a little uneasy about gambling a new transmission if mine gives up the ghost using non genuine stuff.

Hard to beat the price for this kit. Has fluid, filter and drain plug for $238.

That's crazy. They sell it cheaper than my cost!

I guess I'll be buying 5-10 sets for the shelves at the shop lol

Yes, and the shipping is reasonable as well. I did the entire thing for $250.

Update:
My transmission shifts much smoother (more like the benz, not sure I like that) in D and in DS its quicker ... I put in 6.25 Qrts, took out about 6.5

I miss the quick shifts, its too refined for me, I'll probably drain and fill in ZF lifeguard6 in 5k miles .... Also, noticed a big difference in fuel consumption, I can see 40s while cruising now, I didn't use to see those at 80 mph

Question is, I really need to remove entire 9.5 Qrts next time, would it help to start the engine for a quick sec to drain more out ?? It would stay in P, would that hurt the tranny ?
